Jay was also a principal financier of the union military effort during the american civil war. Cooke formed his own banking firm on January 1,1861.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Fisk was born on April 1,1834 Bennington, Vermont. James amassed a  considerable fortune by smuggling southern cotton through the union blockade. Fisk was making money by controlling and operating the Narragansett steamship company. James became a partner in Gould's effort to corner the gold market in 1869. James Fisk was shot in a quarrel over a popular actress on Jan.6, 1872 and died the next day.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Hopkins was born September 3,  1814, Richmond Country, Va.  Mark was a California capitalist who helped build the Central pacific Railroad. Hopkins joined with another merchant named Collis P. Huntington to form Hunting &amp; Hopkins in 1855. He and a few other men organized a company called the Central Pacific Railroad. Mark Hopkins died March 29,1878, Yuma, Arizona trying to seek health cure.</div>]]></description>

At 22 he opened his own brokerage firm and joined the stock exchange. In 1899 he tried to secure a no-cost extension to one of his street railway lines. Charles Tyson Yerkes Died in New York December 29,1905 at the age of 68. </div>]]></description>

Seligman opened a large clothing store to sell European imports. The Seligman's firm made a number of investments in railroads. Joseph Seligman died April 25, 1880 at the age of 60.</div>]]></description>
