The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln In January 1863. However, this did not free slaves completely; slaves were only free in states that were acting rebelliously. Lincoln soon realized this would not completely abolish slavery.

The 13th Amendment was passed and ratified on December 6th, 1865. Georgia was the final state to vote to pass the amendment. Slavery throughout the United States diminished, and slaves began to earn their rights back.

On December 14th, 1863, House Republican James Ashley was the first to introduce an amendment to ban slavery throughout the United States. Later that month, James Wilson (another House Republican) introduced a similar amendment, with the same goal to abolish slavery. Due to this, spread of the idea spread throughout the United States.

On February 10, 1864, the amendment was first brought to the main powers of the United States: The Senate and The House of Representatives. The Senate approved of the Amendment quite quickly on April 8th, 1864. However, the House took a lot longer, approving the amendment on Janurary 1st, 1865

Andrew Johnson

Andrew Johnson, originally the Vice President, was appointed as President after Lincoln's assassination. Johnson utilized his power as Chief Executive to force the Southern States to ratify the Amendment. This resulted in the amendment reaching enough votes to be an official amendment on December 6, 1865.
