He believed that men own themselves, therefore, they should be allowed to gain ownership if they work for what they want. In John Locke Second Treatise on Government, he said that God gave the world to everyone in common however he believed that men should be able to obtain individual property. He used the example of a man of picking up an apple to explain this theory of property. He said that if he were to come across an apple on the floor and if he picked it up then the apple would be considered part of his property since he put in the work to get it. The theory of natural law and rights was most likely the central focus in John Locke's philosophy. In the seventeen century he said that he  believed in natural rights and stated them as "Life,Liberty, and Property." The natural rights are law that are given to people by the legal system. They are laws that every individual should have. John Locke believed that life meant that everyone should be entitled to live. Liberty means that everyone should have the freedom to do as they please as long as it doesn't conflict with the first right. The state of nature to him meant "that the state of nature exists wherever there is no legitimate political authority able to judge disputes and where people live according to the law of reason" according to Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy article. Locke's definition of state of nature was different then Hobbes, Locke thought that men  kept their promises and honored their obligations. Whereas Hobbes believed in the natural civilization of mankind with no government and no civilization.
