MONDAY

After having the zoom with Charlie, it feels strange to be back after the long break! The brief seems rather complex and long - but exciting nonetheless. I also made sure to make a group chat for my group so we can stay in contact about the project.

WEEK 2

MONDAY

I was finally able to meet up with my group in person - we all shared our research and collectively decided on the theme of protection. We made a quick mind map exploring all the different visuals and concepts we could explore within this subcategory - everyone seemed really enthusiastic, so I think we’re off to a good start! The day ended with everyone discussing their themes with the rest of the class in a crit like setting - I ended up speaking for our group and stumbled over my words a lot, I need to work on my presentation skills!

TUESDAY

I had my first workshop with Colin today. We had to draw out our trouser pattern pieces from the master pattern and add small alterations. I had quite a lot of difficulty keeping up- especially considering that I have no prior experience with this - but I was able to finish it.

WEDNESDAY

I had a life drawing and a workshop class today - it was rather busy!

I really enjoyed doing the life drawing. I especially loved being able to contribute towards dressing the model up to control her silhouette. It made the task that much more engaging with the shapes constantly changing. It was also great being pushed to use a more cubist approach, as it forced you to look outside the box and revaluate what you see in a different way.

In the afternoon I had a short class with Colin. We were learning about the different seams and the process of pressing fabric in relation to a garment. It was wonderful to learn this information, as while simple, I’ve never been introduced to 2 of them prior.

WEEK 3

TUESDAY

We were required to cut out the pattern pieces from calico today, as well as marking, notching, overlooking and apply interfacing to most of the pieces. I had quite a bit of difficulty initially trying to figure out the grain line and alighting it correctly, but once that was done, it was relatively smooth sailing until I had to overlock the pieces - I made quite a few mistakes because of my inexperience, but I was able to complete all my work by the end of class.

THURSDAY

We got to meet Valdone for the first time. She showed us her work from her forth year and discussed her progression from Grays to where she is today. She also briefly talked about her business. It was nice to get some personal insight into Valdone as a person & a creative before having her tomorrow in class.

FRIDAY

My group & I had a brief crit with Valdone today. She let us know that we didn’t need to settle on a concrete theme just yet - it could be decided further down the line. This was a major relief as we have been finding it difficult to get a more specific theme beyond protection. In addition to this, Valdone also clarified that we should continue on with our own research and not bother too much with thinking about what the other group members are doing just yet - we can do this later. I found that a major stress had been taken off my shoulder after this crit, it helped a lot.

WEEK 4

MONDAY

Today we had a crit with Charlie and Valdone - I found it pretty insightful and they both gave a lot of interesting insight on how I should take my work forward. Charlie suggested going to Blair’s museum (which unfortunately seems to be currently unavailable to book?) as well as adding additional contextual and detail related imagery. I should also try and get my print outs done for my individual and group sketchbook as it’s essential.

It was also nice having a catch up with the group (in person) as I could get a better grasp on what they were researching; it was sometimes hard to gauge this online. Me and Roisin are starting to see a bit of overlap with our research. As well as this, Claire and I discussed ideas to combat the dilemma of both of us making trousers - perhaps an outcome of sheer trousers or shorts? We aren’t entirely sure yet!

In the afternoon, we also had an informative talk about Harris tweed from Beth Wilson. I really enjoyed learning about the history, process and products of Harris tweed; it was especially incredible to hear about the strict regulations they need to abide by - I wouldn’t have ever imagined that it’d be so fickle!

TUESDAY

Today we were looking at the construction of the trousers. We sewed the pockets, zipper and fly in place (which was rather difficult to get my head around some of the placements!) but I finished in the end!

FRIDAY

I had a crit with Valdone. The rest of my group were off, so I discussed some of my queries in relation to my individual work. Valdone recommend to try and do a wider selection of drawings, perhaps more abstract in form (as some of my designs look a little too resolved for the stage we’re currently at!). In addition, I have also been recommended to try draping! As I have some spare Muslin and cheesecloth fabric, I think I’ll explore the possibilities of form and shape in relation to my research with these once I have the opportunity.

WEEK 5

MONDAY

Spoke to Charlie with most of the group today. The overall consensus was that I needed to focus more on a theme, I have enough illustration work for now. After discussing my theme briefly, I came up with a few ideas on the future direction of my work (in relation to concept). As a group we also need fashion sketches finished for Thursday - we might come in & do them Thursday morning.

TUESDAY

We finished off the trousers from Colin’s workshop today- the front & back, as well as the waistband, were all attached together. I had great difficulty with assembling the pieces as I had realised that I’d mucked up the zipper application the week prior. As a result, my finished outcome leaves a lot to be desired as it’s off-centre and messy. I have, however, learnt a lot from this process, so I’ll try not to get too hung up on it.

THURSDAY

I arrived slightly early today so my group & I could get started on our collective collaborative designs. We made a bit of progress, but we still have a significant sum of work to do. In the afternoon, we had Valdone for our very first Thursday sewing session. She recommended that I should make a sample of the trousers I favour the most. In the end, I constructed a small cargo pocket reflecting that of my drawings. I think that I should try and do a larger scale sample, or perhaps one that displays the unique design qualities of my design so I can get a better understanding of how it should work.

FRIDAY

We had Valdone again today, this time for a crit. I was told that I need to have my 6 look sketches done, have a drawn up technical drawing for Colin, samples ordered and to include further contextual research. I feel a little overwhelmed with the work load, but I know I know it’s all necessary to keep up.

WEEK 6

MONDAY

After completing all the work necessary over the weekend, I had my midway review - I found it immensely helpful. Charlie suggested that I should investigate into the idea of a skirt/dress to give it a closer tie to the overall nun theming. I think this would be a wonderful addition to my design in order to connect a closer, more obvious visual tie to my source material. Building on a previous idea I had, Charlie also discussed the possibility of a veil, making that connection back to the ‘Bride of Christ’, my individual theme/concept. I also need to think about incorporating the Harris tweed more in my designs - there’s currently too little. I need to think and adapt my designs to make it fit in, so I may alter some of my chosen illustrations slightly to accommodate to it.

THURSDAY

Today was our first collaborative workshop day. I showed Colin my two selected designs and he felt as though that they were too complex/wouldn’t translate too well onto fabric. To combat this, we decided to opt for a component of one of my designs and work around that. By the end of today, I now have a fully drafted pattern of the components for my trouser. While disappointing that I cannot make my current design a complete reality, I think this may open up the door for the further development that I was talking to Charlie about (i.e, the skirt & veil component). In an odd way, I think this could be a positive shift in direction.

FRIDAY

The group crit with Valdone took place today. She told us that we need to put more emphasis on the group sketchbook and thinking about how each of our garments interact with each other. I totally agree with this, might try & push for more concrete decision making (i.e. the Harris tweed we’re using, the general colour scheme

& the group aesthetic to cement some decisions. Individually, Valdone recommended that I should make more physical manipulations to gain a better understanding of the garment and the fabric. I should also gain more contextual research relating to a designer that ties to my work.

WEEK 7

MONDAY

We had our weekly crit with Charlie. He told us that a mood board, group illustrations and samples should be put into the group sketchbook as soon as possible. On top of this, he told me that I should try more samplings too, perhaps next to some of my drawings to indicate what details may look like once translated onto the garment. I’m going to try and also get more fabric samples from local shops, perhaps exploring the possibility of a PVC related design? I’ll see where this will take me with my development.

THURSDAY

I had my second workshop with Colin doing the toile today. I was able to cut out each component, put interfacing on & cut it out of calico - as well as sewing in the darts and part of the pocket. I wasn’t able to accomplish as much as I wanted today because of my slow speed; to rectify this, I’ll come into a PM session tomorrow to try and catch up.

Following this, I tried to make some samples & had a short discussion with Valdone about detailing and the garments direction. While the samples didn’t go to plan, I feel more comfortable what what I should be producing development wise, as I was rather lost before.

FRIDAY

A lot of what we discussed today was a repetition of what we’ve previously talked about the past few sessions & the day prior - mainly that I need more samples and samplings.

Following this, I attended one of the workshops with Colin to catch up on the trousers. I was able to make a good amount of process, though I am concerned about the lack of detailing regarding them; they’re incredibly simple. While Colin & Charlie say that is fine, I’d still like to bring up this discussion point when we have our toile review.

WEEK 8

MONDAY

During my talk with Charlie today we discussed some of the possibilities for fabrics. Charlie suggested looking into Ripstock nylon as a potential material in my garment. In addition to this, Charlie suggested the idea that my ‘skirt’ should instead be an apron and have a pouch like pocket at the front. I’m going to explore these ideas further in the forthcoming week before the toile review.

THURSDAY

I had two workshop sessions today - one with my group & one in the afternoon. I was able to almost complete the trouser portion - I just need to apply buttons and button holes.

While adjusting the waistband went well, I had some issues. Attaching the waistband seemed simple in theory, But once I made one mistake and had to detach the piece, I had a lot of trouble. I kept misaligning the waistband which led to excessive fraying; this, as a result, made it extremely difficult to conceal the loose threads. Next time I do this pattern, I think I should attach the waistband earlier on and perhaps be more cautious with the alignment to avoid this problem cropping up in the final garment.

FRIDAY

In the morning, I showed my toile to Valdone & discussed a few of the potential options. She recommended for me to explore different colour ways through sketches, also maybe exploring some of the potential fabrics by sampling/putting it along side the drawings. Having someone new look at the toile other than Colin helped me generate further ideas & potential development - for example, a turn up or a pair of pockets on the back was a suggestion I liked the sound of - it would also add interest as my design is relatively plain.

In the afternoon I had another session with Colin. Today we were exploring the potential in having a skirt - an addition to the trousers to tie a close link to the nuns. I was able to draw up a pattern influence by nun’s veils - it’s unconventional in the sense that it’s only partial (it only covers the waistband a little). Over the weekend I’m going to stitch the pieces together & finish off the rest when I next see Colin on Wednesday morning.

WEEK 9

MONDAY

After speaking with Charlie, I got a lot of extremely helpful advice on how I should approach the placement of the Harris tweed & the other fabrics that’ll be used on my garment. A suggestion was also made to make the skirt double sided as opposed to one sided, which I think could be an interesting development of what I’ve done thus far! The idea of additional button holes on the waistband of the skirt was also discussed - I think this would show more technical absolute than a tie to close the skirt, however, I think the ties relate closer to my research; so I think I’ll explore both ideas through drawing and perhaps a bit of physical development.

WEDNESDAY

Toile review

I was finally able to finish my garment today in time for the toile review - all I needed to do was attach the waistband - the 6cm waistband fit perfectly onto the skirt.

For the toile review itself, our groups design came together nicer than expected as a collective! Major adjustment need to be made to the waistband to ensure that it has a proper fit (particularly around the backside) but I really like how my pieces come together and complement the rest of the look. I think I need to make a few minor adjustments in relation to fitting, but overall the style will remain the same.

I also enquired about back pockets, though Charlie seemed to think it wasn’t necessary.

We also discussed the materials and arrangement of the Harris tweed and faux suede. After discussing with Charlie and Colin, we have concluded that the main trouser should contain the Harris tweed (waistband and a turn up at the bottom) whilst the skirt should probably be a black and white piece, with a black exterior and a white interior.

Overall I found the toile review immensely helpful. I feel like I know exactly what I need to do next and feel much more comfortable with how the groups look appears as a collective.

WEEK 10

MONDAY

The crit with Charlie made me realise that I need much more physical, fabric development to be shown in my sketchbook. I need to try and show a more decisive line of thought with the process of my garment, as I have jumped around without the supporting development evidence.

For the sustainable brief, Charlie advised that I should get more primary research & put more focus into the sustainability aspect. I think I need to get the sample in fast so I can produce some sort of prototype.

THURSDAY & FRIDAY

I tried to prioritise the development of my garment these past two days, going in for extra sessions with Colin to ensure that I get everything done & to the highest of standards. I think I’ll only need a few more sessions to complete the entire garment; I just need to make sure I don’t repeat any previous mistakes I made in my toile.

WEEK 11

MONDAY

The crit involved both Charlie and Valdone today. I was able to create a selection of samples and a prototype over the weekend based on the previous crit. This helped bulk up my sketchbook a little more. I was also advised to put focus into the sustainability project & source some material for the prototype. I think I might take a different course of action for my material of choice, considering that recycled nylon is expensive (and takes a while) to get.

FRIDAY

I had a short individual crit with Valdone today. She was able to answer a lot of questions i had regarding the checklist. It seems like I need to put a major focus into finishing & developing my sustainable project. I need to start thinking about my line ups and my approach to them.

WEEK 12

MONDAY

Harris Tweed Crit

The very last crit of the year was with the Harris tweed representatives, Charlie, Colin and Valdone. We were able to see the finished collective work all together for the very first time too - I was surprised by how well our looks merged together in terms of shape, form & colour scheme. When the discussion came to my trousers, the waistband was the area of interest with the shape it creates. Beth also suggested that if I was to develop it further, it’d be interesting to see the skirt extend all the way around to the other side - I could perhaps do a drawing of this suggestion in my line up. Overall I think the crit went relatively well & as a group we received fairly positive feedback.

TUESDAY

Photoshoot

We were finally able to see the whole collective look in a more professional setting. It was really exciting to swap around certain garments and see how they matched up together with all our varying individual components. I think that certain components of the design didn’t flow quite as seamlessly as I would’ve liked (Maybe we should’ve been a bit more restrictive on the fabric and colour schemes used to get a more ‘uniform’ outcome) but overall I think we were able to create a compelling outfit which translated well, particularly through the poses used and the wonderful work of Fergus, the photographer.

FINISHED TOILE - ALTERATIONS

I ALSO NEED TO TAKE THE WAISTBAND IN SIGNIFICANTLY AS IT DOES NOT FIT THE MODEL AT ALL - IN THE CRIT WE HAD TO PIN THE EXCESS OUT OF THE WAY. FINALLY, I NEED TO WORK ON THE ALIGNMENT WHERE THE WAISTBAND AND THE CROTCH MEET AS I HAD A LITTLE BIT OF A FRAYING ISSUE IN THIS ATTEMPT.}

MAKE SURE TO MARK ALL THE DETAILS ONTO THE CALICO - NOTCHES AND AND DRILL HOLES FOR THE DARTS.

CUT OUT THE INTERFACING FOR THE FLY, PLACKET AND WAISTBAND PIECES.

USE THE PRESS TO FUSE THE INTERFACING IN PLACE FOR THESE PIECES.

OVERLOCK EDGES OF ALL THE PATTERN PIECES - EXCLUDING THE WAISTLINE OF THE CENTRE FRONT AND BACK AND THE CURVING DETAILS OF THE POCKET/POCKET LINING.

SEW THE DARTS IN PLACE (NOT BACKSTITCHING AT THE START AND END) AND HAND KNOT THESE IN PLACE. IRON THESE IN PLACE TOWARDS THE MIDDLE.

PINCH THE FABRIC IN THE MIDDLE OF THE CENTRE FRONT PIECES AND IRON - THIS CREATES THE CREASE IN THE FRONT OF THE TROUSERS

PUT THE POCKET LINING PIECE ON THE CENTRE FRONT POCKET, ALIGN THE TWO AND SEW IN PLACE WITH A 1CM SEAM ALLOWANCE. FLIP THIS ONTO THE OTHERSIDE AND PRESS TO GET A SEAMLESS SHAPE. ATTACH THE POCKET BAG ONTO THE LINING PIECE, USING A 1 CM SEAM ALLOWANCE AGAIN.

ATTACH THE EDGE (STRAIGHT SIDE) OF FLY ONTO THE CENTRE FRONT PIECE WITH A 1 CM SEAM ALLOWANCE. PRESS, THEN TOPSTITCH.

GET A ZIP AND MARK THE LENGTH REQUIRED, MAKE A NEW ZIP STOPPER BY SEWING A BACK AND FORTH IN PLACE.

CHANGE THE SEWING MACHINES FOOT AND APPLY THE ZIPPER, SEWING AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT CATCHING THE ZIPPER.

GET THE PLACKET AND SEW IT TO THE ZIPPER IN THE MIDDLE, KEEPING THE TWO TOGETHER.

MAKE SURE THE PLACKET IS LINED UP CORRECTLY (PLACKET IN MIND) AND SEW CLOSE TO THE ZIPPER TEETH.

MOVE THE ZIPPER TAPE AND THE FLY TOGETHER, PUSH THE REST OF THE TROUSER OUT OF THE WAY AND SEW IN THE MIDDLE. HOPEFULLY THE FLY SHOULD COVER THE ZIPPER ENTIRELY.

MARK OUT THE FLY SHAPE BY HAND ON THE FRONT AND TOPSTITCH THIS.

SEW TOGETHER THE CENTRE BACK AND CENTRE FRONT TOGETHER, RIGHT SIDES TOGETHER, ON THE OUTSIDE AND BETWEEN THE PIECES WITH A 1 CM SEAM ALLOWANCE.

SEW THE TOP OF THE TWO PIECES TOGETHER BY THE CROTCH, 1 CM SEAM ALLOWANCE.

ATTACH THE WAISTBAND ON, RIGHT SIDE FACING THE GARMENT, SEW ALONG WITH A 1 CM SEAM ALLOWANCE AND FLIP IT OVER. IRON A 1CM SEAM ALLOWANCE ON THE RAW EDGE AND THEN TOP STITCH THIS DOWN ONTO THE WAISTBAND.

FINISH OFF BY PRESSING AND DOING A SLIP STITCH ON THE BOTTOM HEM OF THE TROUSERS.}
