The Use of Rhetoric in Advertisement

In Project Two, I wrote about the cosmetic industry and beauty standards for modern women. I specifically analyzed an advertisement from a brand known for their skincare products. In this advertisement, the brand utilizes a celebrity for credibility, while also claiming the product will improve quality of life and imperfections in physical appearance, showing appeals to both ethos and pathos.

Beauty Standards in a Patriarchy

The cosmetic industry is a broad industry, including producers of skincare products, haircare products, makeup, and much more. Despite including such a variety of products, companies within the cosmetic industry very rarely create products with the intention of selling them to men. This is due to the patriarchal nature of our society. Beauty standards have always existed and applied to everybody, but they disproportionately impact women. The pressure to look a certain way and take actions to altering appearance is a mostly female experience, and is inescapable for women. Because of this societal pressure, cosmetics products are more often than not advertised towards women.

Beauty Standards within Cosmetics

Beauty standards and the cosmetic industry go hand in hand; they rely on one another to survive. Without beauty standards, the cosmetic industry would collapse. Most of the cosmetic products are being created with the intention of profiting off of the insecurities of women. Most products are advertised as being able to fix an imperfection or solve an issue with their physical appearance. If women did not believe their physical appearance needed to be altered in some way, they would not feel a need to purchase cosmetic products. In a similar fashion, beauty standards are heavily perpetuated by cosmetic companies; in advertising and marketing, these companies treat certain features, such as wrinkles, as imperfections or flaws. By doing so, they perpetuate the beauty standards put in place for women, making the issue worse while painting themselves as the solution.
