Rayon is not a true synthetic. Chemicals are added to manufacture rayon. A specific chemical is sodium hydroxide. To get rayon sheets of purified are steeped in sodium hydroxide. By doing this it produces sheets of alkali cellulose. Next the sheets are dried, shredded into crumbs, and then aged in metal containers for 2-3 days. In the containers, the temperature and humidity are carefully controlled.
http://www.madehow.com/Volume-1/Rayon.html

Sodium hydroxide derived from salt water/ brine. It is usually manufactured by the electrolysis of brine, a salt (NaCI) solution. During the process water (H20) is reduced to hydrogen gas (H) and hydroxide ion (OH). The hydroxide ion bonds with the sodium to form sodium hydroxide.
https://www.tomsofmaine.com/our-promise/ingredients/sodium-hydroxide-#:~:text=Sodium%20hydroxide%20is%20derived%20from,form%20sodium%20hydroxide%20(NaOH).
