All of government officials were the second highest ranked of the people in the Byzantine Empire because they assisted in making the military, financial decisions, and laws. Next are the soldiers. They were important because they protected the Byzantine Empire. Right in the middle were the merchants. They made all of the goods that people traded and some of the clothes that people wore in the Byzantine Empire. Next were the artisans. They were important because they made weapons, jewelry, pottery, glass, and helped with leather. One more down were the farmers. They made and harvested all of the food that everyone ate. Lastly, were the slaves. They were treated horribly and they did most of the work at their owner's house.
