Democritus was an Ancient Greek philosopher that contributed to the invention of atoms. In 400 B.C.He believed that the smallest piece of matter was considered "indivisible." He also named that "atomos." By saying "atomos" he is meaning that the smallest pieces of matter in the atom cannot be cut into a smaller format.

John dalton was an English chemist that experimented many times to eventually lead to the first idea of atoms. In the early 1800's in 1803 John Dalton made the first atomic theory since a while back when the "death of chemistry was happening 2000 years ago! Dalton also declared that all matter is made up of atoms. He stated that atoms are too hard to see, therefore they are uncuttable. He also has shown that all atoms are givin their own element.

The scientist J.J. Thompson created the idea that there was something else that was making up the atom in smaller particles. In 1897 J.J. Thompson discovered the existence of one of the negatively charged particles that made up the atom. That particle was called the electron. He also stated that the atom was created with a positively charged substance with negatively charged particles scattered around. He created the "Plum Pudding" model that was his atomic theory. The "Plum Pudding" model related to a chocolate chip cookie and how the chocolate chips scatter around like the negatively charged electrons in the atom.

Rutherford created an experiment using a positively charged substance and gold foil to prove that the particles inside the atom are not "Plum Pudding." The time was 1908 when during Rutherford's experiment he proved that the electrons are not scattered around like the "plum pudding" model. Rutherford proved that the positively charged particles created a ball in the center of the atom called the nucleus with negatively charged particles surrounding it. He also stated that the atom was made mostly up of empty space, not electrons scattered around the whole thing.

In 1913 the scientist Niels Bohr built on the fact the the atoms mass/weight was mostly made up of the particles in the nucleus. He proved that the positively charged atoms contributed to most of the atoms weight. His atomic theory was also compared to a solar system on how the planets orbit the sun and how the negatively charged particles orbit around the nucleus.

After Chadwicks experiment he stated that there was another particle in the center of the atom where the nucleus is. He stated that their had to be a neutral charged atom for the atom to form correctly.

In the 20th century these scientists created the Modern cloud theory. It stated that electrons don't actually orbit around the nucleus like the planets in the solar system. They stated they do move around at high speeds inside of an electron cloud around the nucleus. The electron cloud allows the electrons inside of it to orbit around the nucleus 1 billion times per second.
