General Stress is NORMAL, Its general not because its the only form on stress a person has, but because me, a normal person can have the same stress triggers as many other people just like me. I have several stressors that contribute to my daily stress. Being in the Military is a huge one, being a female in the military is another but being a female minority in the military is the largest contributor. Nor to mention I am also a Fiancée, A dog mom, a daughter, a student and a mentor. I know there are probably many more generic stressors that contribute to my stress, something simple as putting gas in the car before it hits "E" can even cause some stress.

I like many adults go through a roller coaster of stress levels, this also changes as i get older. I find that different things stress me as I age, but even more importantly, the little things stress me less and less. I have found that a minor inconvenience, like getting gas for my car stressed me out twice as much 3 years ago in comparison to today. When I was younger, I would procrastinate to the last minute, often making me late and gave me a rushed feeling. Fast forward to my thirties, I tend to just get easy things out of the way as soon as it pops up. So now, whenever i have a little free time on drives to or from work, I put gas in my car, sometimes without the gas light even coming on, It saves me time in the long run, and that little stress from being rushed gets minimized.

For me, I handle stress well, at least I think so. I have found that the best way for me to manage my stress is to eliminate it. Honestly, there is no magic word, drink, exercise routing to ctrl-alt-delete stress from your lives, but there are preventative measures you can take to reduce or minimize any future stress. I just realized this taking a health psychology course, when I read what Proactive coping was, I immediately knew that's how I dealt with my stress typically using problem-focused methods to reduce or get rid of potential stressors. According to Sarafino and Smith, people often feel stress when they see they don’t have enough time to do the tasks of the day. They need to organize their worlds to make things happen efficiently. I have become more organized reducing the stress I have from feeling rushed. Being rushed gives me great anxiety, I cant be late, I cant be late! Organization helps me not feel that way.

Sarafino, E. P., & Smith, T. W. (2017). Health Psychology Biopsychosocial Interactions (9th ed.). John Wiley & Sons Inc.

I have been blessed to have a wonderful family that is there for me in times of need. My wonderful mother is the best role model I could have asked for. A hardworking strong, independent woman. She has shown me that there is no limitation a woman, a Hispanic woman has. She has seen lows and highs in her life, from loss of her father at an early age, to becoming a grandparent. She has truly exemplified what it means to be strong. Knowing her you would not know that she has experiences heartache and stress beyond belief. A very masculine father who loves me unconditionally. He has set a high standard for any man wanting to be apart of my life. My father has taught me how to be independent, how to be treated by men in my life. He is my rock and I love he and my mother for making such a resilient hard working woman. Lastly, my newest rock, my loving man in my life. He is who I go to when I cant handle stress, he lets me vent and speak to him about topics he doesn't even understand(military life). He is always there for me and willing to fight any battle with me as a partner. No matter the situation he always says we will get through it together. Having such dependable people in my life has made my stress ease. With the support of my loved ones, stressors of life seem to fade away.

My job gives me stress. I know we all deal with work related stressors. Personalities, job requirements and standards needing to meet timelines, It can all be so stressful. As part of the 1% of the U.S. population in the military, I have my own set of unique stressors, deployments, and lack of support from loved ones can be hard when you are so far from land. It can really take a toll on your mental health. Overall, both military men and women were nearly twice as likely to report feeling high levels of stress in their military work (39%) than in their family life (22%). For both men and women, nearly 4 out of 10 perceived a great deal or a fairly large amount of work-related stress (Bray, Camlin, Fairbank, Dunteman and Wheeless, 2001).

Bray, R. M., Camlin, C.

Having a healthy, normal level of blood pressure is very important to me. I constantly monitor my BP because high blood pressure runs in my family. Stress is a huge factor to consider when high BP is diagnosed. Having low stress puts me at ease and help with my BP. Constriction of blood vessels and increase in heart rate does raise blood pressure, but only temporarily — when the stress reaction goes away, blood pressure returns to its pre-stress level. This is called situational stress, and its effects are generally short-lived and disappear when the stressful event is over (American Heart Association,2016).

Little did i know that being aggressive is a stress reliever. Well, being assertive. Assertiveness involves expressing one’s opinions and preferences directly, but with out insult or intimidation directed toward the other person (Sarafino & Smith,2017). In other words, keeping emotions in and not speaking about them builds stress. It is best to speaking about issues you disagree with in a calm and collected manner, to not intimidate or cause stress to the other party.
