I believe that we cannot accomplish meaningful change unless we first address the core mindsets that keep influencers fighting against each other instead of working together. The best example of this barrier is between the perceived threat between traditional public school models and alternative school options.

Increasing opportunities in our teacher preparation programs that include entrepreneurship in education.

We have traditionally only prepared teachers for one pathway which is to teach in a traditional school setting and move up through administration. I believe we are missing out on the value of teaching entrepreneurship in this field. Preparing educators who may want to start their own school models or create solutions that improve existing school models.

We need to embrace the future and usher in a new tapestry of learning. The future ecosystem reflects a transformation away from disconnected, episodic learning and toward a curated continuum of lifelong learning, tailored to individuals, and delivered across diverse locations, media, and periods of time. Our forerunners were relegated to structures like grades and transcripts, in part, because of the technology available to them. Emerging technologies allow us to embrace concepts of mastery and competency-based models. We need to introduce new types of credentials including competency badges and micro-credentials to communicate individuals' talents, skills, knowledge, preferences and experience.

After earning my Ph.D. in Spanish at the University of Texas at Austin, I began my career as a university faculty member teaching languages and literature. I have also served in university administration, as a textbook publishing executive, and as a successful co-founder and executive for multiple educational technology startups. I have additional experience as a textbook author and have been an active researcher and blogger in the learning technology space since 2003. Over the past decade, my work has focused increasingly on how to provide equitable access to college-level learning for everyone in the U.S.

After much trial and error, I find myself relying more and more on the following philosophies:

In education, low tech beats high tech pretty much every time when it comes to achieving improved, universal learning efficacy;

There is a natural order of progression for becoming an effective leader. You must first be an effective decision-maker and then evolve into a strong community-builder before you can hope to become an effective vision-crafter;

It’s impossible to edit a blank page;

Done really is better than perfect, if for no other reason than the fact that you never achieve anything near perfection in your initial iterations of a product or program;

The best way to begin anything is simply to begin.

My Website: https://learningdesignchallenge.com/
