Memrise is a mobile app which helps ESL (and other languages) learners to build new vocabulary. This is a good app for a number of reasons.
1. It is an example of the gamification of a fairly tedious activity in language learning - vocabulary building and recall.
2. It able to be adapted by teachers to include specific vocabulary related to a course text book which is an example of ''authentic" learning - where the activity is meaningful to the student, not learning abstract language that is unrelated to the students current course  understanding. This enable the student to learn in context of the language and other learning.
3. This app is mobile friendly, which means the learner can potentially build vocabulary anywhere. the learner can tailor their learning experience to occur for a set period every day or on different schedules. Which means potentially a daily commute be better utilized. There are a number of reminder options available too to recall lackadaisical learners.
4. There are recognition of learning goals but in motivating usage and a checking facility for teachers to see who is, and critically isn''t participating
