In the Hobbit, Bilbo saves the dwarves in the forest of Mirkwood by fighting and having the spiders chase him. Another example is of him sneaking around in the Elves palace, and acquiring the keys to the dungeons, and escaping by barrels through a trap door. 
"They wondered what evil fate had befallen him, magic or dark monsters; and shuddered as they lay lost in the forest." (166).
