When I graduated with my associates degree in interpreting for the deaf, I though nothing could hold me back. I was convinced I was going to be the greatest interpreter the world had ever seen. The only thing stopping me was the test to get my state license. Will I scheduled the test and I went in and Bombed it. When I got the test results it was exactly what I expected FAIL! I was devastated for a little while, but then I realized I was just not ready. It gave me an opportunity to rethink and change course and look at it from a growth mindset. Now, at least I had the experience and I could take another stab at it.

I have been in two different majors besides education. I was so close to finishing in one major that I could see myself walking down the stage. One class kept getting in my way and I had to pass it in order to move on to the last year I needed. I could not pass it for the life of me. I had to go back home and tell my parents "I can't do it". My dad was a bit disappointed but I like to think everything happens for a reason. I realized I wanted, no I needed to be a teacher so I can see the smiles and kids faces when I help them learn something. Maybe that class was a blessing in disguise in stopping me from going into the wrong profession.

I went to an early college High school that is basically a normal high school but you take college courses as well to graduate with an associates degree. It was a very challenging school to go to but I was confident in myself that I could keep up with my classes. Mid junior year Covid started being a thing and school switched to online very rapidly. It was really hard to adapt to the online classes so fast and on top of that balance my high school and college courses as well. My counselor requested to talk to me in the beginning of senior year and told me that I might not be able to graduate with my associates. From there on I tried my hardest that year and tried cramming all the classes I needed to catch up. Unfortunately, I didn't succeed but I believe that I handled this experience from a growth mindset because of my determination.

I have not been able to graduate from college for one thing or another. I have been coming for one or two classes per semester and then I will stop going because of a life time event. Were am I going with this is that ever since I started my educational career I have taken the English class for about 5 times now. The reason I say now is because I am currently taking that course for this semester I am determine to finish this time around. I have fail the course once and the rest of the attempts I drop the class. Since this class is a prerequisite class it had kept me from moving forward to start my teaching course classes. Even though this could have kept me from continuing my career I am still here and pushing through with a determination to successfully pass this course.

After graduating nursing school in 2018 I failed the NCLEX. Between the few months before retaking the exam I came to an understanding that I was taking this exam for myself, I had nothing to prove to anyone but myself. I handled it from a growth mindset. During my time with studying I joined a study group and quickly became the person giving lessons and examples of NCLEX questions, I would even print out modules for the people I was studying with and share resources that I found that helped me. We took over a study room 3 times a week and I was at the dry erase board writing notes to share with the group. After retaking the exam I passed and worked in the nursing field as a registered nurse for a little over 2 years. I realized that I missed the joy that I got from teaching and engaging in my study group. I believe that me failing the NCLEX the first time really allowed me to grow and learn more about myself than I would have thought.

I had never really thought about what I wanted my career to be because nursing was stuck to my mind. It was until my sophomore year after failing anatomy 1 two times, and anatomy 2 one time , that I realized that I couldn't pass it for a reason. I figured out that the reason was because It wasn't really for me, So i took some time to figure out what I really wanted, and that's how I lead my way into teaching. - Growth mindset

I went to an Early College High school which provides many benefits like college credit when graduating and the ability to go into college with your basics completed. The struggle I was faced with was what career path I wanted to follow once I graduated high school. I received guidance all saying different things from both my family and counselors. I was conflicted on who I should listen to. It was around that time that I finally realized my career path is a decision only I can make for myself. Over the years I became dependent on others making my decisions for me but not this time. It took a step back and a different perspective to realize what was best for me. I believe I handled my problems with a fixed mindset; seeking validation from those around me and doing things up to their standards. A growth mindset is how you look at your set of problems open-minded instead of with defeat. This week taught me to have a positive reaction to a challenge. Instead of looking at how difficult a problem is look at what you can do to improve it.

My sophomore year of college, I failed a math class that was required in my degree plan. I was disappointed in myself because I knew I could of done better, if only I would of put more effort into it. At the time my family was having a hard time financially and I had to pick up another job. I was working part time on both job while also going to school full time. During this time, I just wanted to give up but I knew that wasn't an option as I had come a long way, so I looked for options. They offered the class that summer and I registered for it, I took it with a different teacher and dedicated myself to study and focus on that class as it was the only one I was taking for summer 1. I felt more engaged this time around and actually understood the material. I handled it from a growth mindset; instead of letting it bring me down, I learned from my mistake and just moved on from it.

My freshmen year of college was not my brightest moment. Being a first timer in college, I didn't really know much about it. I was the first in my family to ever go to college so no one really explained to me how to get organized, how to study, etc. That fall semester one of my psychology professor spoke to me saying that it was better for me to withdraw from the class better than receiving an F. My english professor had said almost the same thing but was giving an opportunity to do extra credit. I had withdrew from my psychology class and it was just an ugly feeling of failure. For my english class I had stayed and had done the extra credit that he had assigned, finals had came around and well I didn't pass the course. I had already felt like a failure when I had withdrew from psychology and this just did not make it better. What maid it a little worse for me was that I had to pay for my classes, I didn't receive any financial aid. Spring semester came along and I had told myself that i was not going to make the same mistake again. I didn't want my money to go to waste, because not passing a classing is basically just throwing money away. Took the same courses again with different professors. I had set up a routine for myself when it came to assignments and when to study for exams and quizzes. Since I had already taken the courses in the fall semester I had felt ready for what was to come in the spring semester. I handled this experience from a growth mindset, even though I did bring myself down, I had learned my own mistake and just kept moving forward and keeping my routine for school.

My first semester of college was very difficult for me as I tried to get used to this new life experience. My time management skills were poor and I would always procrastinate into completing work. I couldn’t concentrate on my studies nor schoolwork because everything was done online and I couldn’t figure out how to use Blackboard. I had a few goals for my first semester and that was for me to be on the President’s or Dean’s list and have a high GPA. However, neither of those things happened as I barely managed to pass one course and my freshman year was off to a bad start. This experience lead for me to handle my spring semester with a growth mindset as I knew my abilities could be developed. I forced myself to study for more hours, attended tutoring sessions, and asked my professors when I needed help to improve my grades. It is to say that I learned from my mistakes, and I grew from this negative experience.

The last semester, Spring 2021, I failed my very first college course. I felt terrible about myself but I did expect that very thing to happen because I knew from the beginning that I was not giving it my all. This semester, I have been trying to redirect all my focus to my school work in hopes that I will do better. This is because I know I can do it and out do even my own expectations so long as I try. I believe this to be from a growth mindset that I have set for myself. Not yet to me is a great way to encourage students to try again rather than give up. It is another way of saying "you can do it but you have got to give it another try." I love that for students because there is only hope and place for encouragement and nothing other. The character traits we learned of make it to where us, as educators, have the open mindedness that we need to be able to work with the fresh minds of young learners.

I made it into LVN school back in 2016, and during the second semester (one semester shy of graduating) I went through an ugly seperation from my kids father. It got so out of control an absence caused me to fail and not continue. For a while after I was stuck in that "fixed" mindset that I couldn't manage. I was angry, embarrassed and felt like a failure. Some time had to pass for me to realize it was my circumstances that impeded my success and not my capability. That door may have closed but that didn't mean another wasn't opened. Having two girls at the time and as a newly single mother i had to change my career choice to better suit my life. By that time i also had great experience teaching kids because my children were both autistic and i practically was a teacher already at home. A decision was made and here i am Going on my third year as a paraprofessional in a sped unit getting hands on learning experience and working on my bachelor's degree. Id say overall i had a growth mindset. My responsibility as a mother and as a determined individual, i didnt let failure stop me and I will continue to overcome each obstacle at a time.

At the end of high school most of everyone was applying to colleges and for the most part I was excited, but yet felt like I was nowhere near ready. At the time I was having trouble with my algebra classes and didn't know how it would affect me when taking college courses. Time and time again I would get low math grades and knew I had to spend extra time working on my math skills. Moreover, I kept a growth mindset and accepted that I was going to have to work twice as hard to not only pass the class, but to be able to take the necessary college courses I needed to. Through the end of high school I worked with a tutor and even took a math refresher course during my freshmen year of college to be able to keep up with some math knowledge. I learned over the years that somethings need patience and a little extra dedication when you want to achieve it. We all face tough situations in life and I believe those situations are what help us grow to be successful.

When I graduated high school I didn’t feel ready to start college so fast, but it was forced on me by my councelor. My first semester in college, I failed all my classes because I just felt so unmotivated and depressed all the time. I would just not show up to class or do my work. I failed all 5 classes that semester. Once the semester was over, I still felt depressed but my councelor told me that if by next semester I didn’t get my grades up, that they would take away my fafsa. I got my self together and pushed myself to try. Having that growth mindset of trying to better my grades helped me pass my classes that semester. I would turn in my work and go to class. I still felt like I wasn’t ready for college, that it was too early for me, but I tried my hardest to push myself to pass my classes and I did. I will try to keep that mindset throughout the rest of what’s left of college for me.

This is not boasting, but to be honest, I have never failed any of my academic classes. Were they all A’s? no, they were not. In high school, these non-A’s probably would have bothered me because I wanted only the best scores. I wanted perfect marks on everything. But it’s been a few years since then, and I find I have grown as a person. Perfect marks are not important to me anymore because I have found that the satisfaction from them is only temporary—that there is more to life than straight A’s. However, these high scores came from me not ever really trying either. I rarely studied or made any effort to learn the material. I found it dull. I was (and still am) a heavy procrastinator, which is not a trait that I like about myself. However, I can’t seem to stop because I never suffer from any repercussions that procrastinating would have. My grades always manage to work out. Stopping myself from procrastinating and settling for “getting by” is probably one of my biggest failures. I feel like I have handled this with both a fixed and growth mindset depending on my mood swings. When I am positive and happy, I try my best to study and do my work on time. I do my best. However, when my emotions become negative, I stop. It’s a constant back and forth that I have to figure out a way to stop, but I think overall, I have a growth mindset that sometimes gets stuck. I think the role of “not yet” in my professional road to becoming a teacher is to say that I need to do better in making a greater effort to achieve my goals. I have not yet mastered perseverance. I think the dispositions that were reviewed this week and the character traits from the VIA help create a path for growth with set goals or ideals to strive for.

For as long as I can remember I've always had a fixed mindset, when going gets tough I get going. So when I was placed in an AP Chemistry class my sophomore year of high school you best believe I was ready to drop that class. I have always been your average B,C student, never your A student. I had already planned to see that it was going to be too hard for me. In my mind I had already set myself up for failure. The first couple of weeks into the class I was failing terribly, F’s after F’s after F’s. I was beyond ready to throw in the towel. By the first report card, it was no surprise I was failing AP Chemistry. When I presented the report card to my parents, I explained to them how I no longer wanted to take the class; It was too hard; I just do not get it. That's what my Dad pulled me aside and said that I needed to figure out a way to pass this class and not just give up. At the time I did not know what I was going to do or how I was going to do it but I was going to try. And that's when I can honestly say I was slowly developing a growth mindset. I sat down with my teacher at the time and spoke to him about what I can do to improve my grades.
