The location was key because they were all beside and in between each other and so a if two countries started a war then whole continent is at war. Often countries would have secret alliances and with multiple countries promising to defend one another which confused matters and brought more countries into the war. Another issue with the alliances is they did not know how to prevent wars without fighting.
