Although there were some difficult moments, it was all worth it because there was so much to discover and look at. In the year 1959, I was chosen to be one of seven astronauts recruited to be apart of Project Mercury. Two years later, I went on the Liberty Bell 7 with two others and became the third man in space. During that flight, I felt like something bad was going to happen. I felt sweat on my forehead, nerves starting to make me shake, and all of the sudden the capsule's hatch just broke open. As I was trying to think of something, I told myself to stay calm, and saw that there was water along where we were heading. Now at this moment, I knew that we needed to head for the waters, so then we have a better likely hood of landing safely. So, I took my place and landed the rocket safely in the Atlantic Ocean. Although it was a safe landing, everything was sinking. I and my crew had to get out quickly. At this point, it was really hard to keep floating and not sink, knowing that I, a professional pilot, will go out knowing it's just me with nothing else. I was born and raised in Indiana. Due to my height, I was limited to sports, so to fill up the time in my day, I earned money by delivering newspapers and picking fresh produce. I would like to say throughout my high school education, I was a very well rounded student with average grades. When I got older, I knew that my goal had everything to do with flight. I enlisted into the Air Force, and got my wings. After time in training, I was sent to Korea and did many missions there before returning home. Although my time in Korea was a lot of work, I did feel good knowing I did a good thing. After being one of a hundred pilots with credit, I received an invitation to learn about the space program.
