Sustainable development has its roots in ideas about sustainable forest management which were developed in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries.: In response to a growing awareness of the depletion of timber resources in England, John Evelyn argued, "Sowing and planting of trees had to be regarded as a national duty of every landowner, in order to stop the destructive over- exploitation of natural resources."

The industrial revolution is connected to the rise of the idea of sustainable development. From the second half of the 19th century, Western societies started to discover that their economic and industrial activities had a significant impact on the environment and the social balance. Several ecological and social crises took place in the world and rose awareness that a more sustainable model was needed.

“Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."
While the modern concept of sustainable development is derived mostly from the 1987 Brundtland Report, it is also rooted in earlier ideas about sustainable forest management and twentieth-century environmental concerns. As the concept of sustainable development developed, it has shifted its focus more towards the economic development, social development and environmental protection for future generations. It has been suggested that "the term 'sustainability' should be viewed as humanity's target goal of human–ecosystem equilibrium
