In my family, the bigger holiday is Christmas Eve. We have a big dinner and wait until about 10pm to open presents. After presents, we attend midnight mass. We do eat the 7 fishes and try not to have any meat. On Christmas Day, we always eat pandoro (translated golden bread) for breakfast. On NYE our tradition is to have lentils for dinner and wear red to bring us fortune and good health for the upcoming year.

In my family, we celebrate more on Christmas Eve. We spend the day making tamales as a family and ponche (a hot fruit punch) that will be eaten for dinner. We play different games, such as loteria, as we wait for midnight. At midnight we place Jesus in the nativity scene and open presents. Christmas Day is spent eating leftover tamales. For New Year's Eve, we traditionally try to wear red, green, or gold which represent love, health and good fortune. We wait until midnight and on the last minutes of the year we eat 12 grapes and make a wish on each one. Each grape represents a month of the new year.

Every Christmas Eve, my husband and his 3 siblings (and their significant others) and I go out to eat or get take out and exchange gifts together. My husband's parents are not in their lives, leaving him and his siblings to create their own new family traditions. Last year we couldn't find anywhere open and ended up getting Domino's! This year we made reservations at a Chinese food restaurant. No matter how simple it is, it has become a tradition that we make special together.
