The cathedral of Santa María del Fiore forms part of the Gothic architecture and maintains the characteristics which allow us to differenciate from other styles. It has pointed arches and ribbed vaults which as well as the arches are pointed(the pointed elements are very common in the gothic style). On the exterior part of the cathedral we can see flying butresses which help to hold the weight of the cathedral. Thanks to these flying butresses the gothic buildings could be made higher than romanic ones.
