The play is set in Europe, in Norway, realism plays are set locally, in Europe

Naturalism challenges stereotypes at the time, like for example, Nora leaving her husband

Middle class characters, who are not extravagant, this is shown through Nora and Torvald are very stereotypical to that time, they are normal and relate able to the audience

There is lots of everyday dialogue - for example when Christine says, "You must not forget that I had a helpless mother and two little brothers. We couldn't wait for you, Nils; your prospects seemed hopeless then."

A Doll's House was inspired by the life of Laura Kieler, a family friend to Henrik Ibsen

Nora and Torvald were loosely based on Laura and her husband

As in the play, Laura signed an illegal loan, this was to pay for her husband's tuberculosis treatment

Laura's secret was discovered by her husband, and differing to the ending she was sent to an asylum, following her treatment she became an author and returned to her family

I think the ending was intentionally chosen to be controversial as it makes a bold feminist statement

I think that the ending of a Doll's House is a satire on how women were only seen as wives and mothers

He is making a comment on the patriarchal society at the time, the significance of the Nora realising her self worth overthrows stigmas that were cast by society,

Nora and her slamming of the door is a slap in the face to a male dominated society

The ending represents the breaking of struggles everyday women faced and Nora's walking out was representative of something women were too scared to do

Nora leaves Torvald after she comes to self realisation that she wants her independence and has realised that she is more than someone's "doll"

The ending was very controversial as Nora was isolating herself from society at that time, leaving her what was seen as a comfortable lifestyle

It was seen as a revelation as women were deemed pretty useless without their husbands at this time and it was thought that they couldn't cope without them
