Calhoun the Vice President became so angry he resigned + returned

to SC to fight the tariff. He believed if a national tariff would hurt his state,

his state could secede. They lowered the tariff in 1832 but not enough- clay

wrote the compromise tariff of 1833 to decrease tensions and force bill was passed

- tariffs eventually came down, force was not used

analysis- idea of secession first used and planted that seed.

what- fought to end slavery and the movement became stronger and ended with the passage of the 13th amendment that outlawed slavery

what- repealed the line created by Missouri compromise, created 2 new territories and allowed popular sovereignty (people vote). This led to "Bleeding Kansas," where citizens who didn't even live in Kansas went to vote for or against slavery. The two groups were angry, and so they fought.

Analysis-considered by some to be the first fighting of the Civil War even though it was 6 years before it started

what- republican candidate Abraham Lincoln won. pro no slavery supporters feared he'd abolish slavery so southern states began to secede and form their own country.
