Suspicion of Phelps having substance first start when he was only 19 after he got pulled over for drunk driving coming from a party. He denied when people asked if he had a problem and claimed that it was "an isolated incident."

He was arrested once again in 2014 for driving while intoxicated. After this he started talking honestly about his feelings and revealed that he was “in a really dark place” and “not wanting to be alive anymore.”
