The Missouri compromise was a argument when Missouri wanted to become a state where if it was their would be an uneven amount of either slave or free states. As a result they added Missouri as a slave state and then added Maine as a new free state, and they would also add a line on the southern border of Missouri where anything under it would be added as a slave state and anything above it would be added as a free state. That would also lead to further conflict.
