In his poem, Whitman is not afraid of death. He sees that as part of life. The corpse is not offensive to him. It seems that he thinks that once dead, he is still here. In the "Dark Shadows" 2012 movie, Barnabus Collins is doomed to life as a vampire who never dies because he spurned the love of Angie, who was a witch. First, however, she killed Barnabus's love, Josette. Then after Angie made Barnabus a vampire, she locked him up in a coffin for 200 years. Fast forward to 1978 when Barnabus happens to get dug up by a street construction crew. Along comes Victoria, who looks to be the reincarnated Josette. She chooses to die or become a vampire like Barnabus in order to be his love. She is not afraid of death. Barnabus does not want the horrid living death of a vampire for her, but after she throws herself off a cliff, like his beloved Josette did, he jumps with her and makes her into a vampire so she does not die. He did not want to live the agony of living as a vampire without his love Victoria/Josette again. This is like Edgar Allen Poe's, "The Raven", where he is confronted with living life without his love, Lenore. He goes crazy because of it, his mind dying while he still lived. If he could have been a vampire, I think he would have made Lenore one as well to never lose her! In the movie "Phantom of the Opera", 2004, the Phantom goes crazy in the end, after knowing that he can never have the love of his life, Christine, similiar to "The Raven".
In Kingston's work "No Name Women", the aunt is the ghost among the living. Her legacy endures. That legacy is that she is a warning to not cross Chinese mores. Warning, warning! In the movie, " Dark Shadows", there are 2 ghosts, each with their own brand of warning. The first is the ghost of Josette, who warns Christine that "he is coming", a reference about Barnabus. The second ghost is that of David's mother, a little boy in the Collins family, who has appeared to David all along, but no one believed David and thought he was crazy. The mother warns, and then kills, the witch Angelique, who threatens her child. Quite a warning from a ghost!

Two really good choices here, Ellen. You've traced the gothic elements beautifully! I'm wondering ... what social critique/issues do you see these works taking up?
