I am a 34 years old Commanding Staff Sergeant over a white U.S. Army company here in France. The last thing I remember before leaving my son and wife was that all men were being enlisted regardless of race between the ages on 21-30(the Draft). My wife writes me telling me how we have initialized total war and everyone is helping with food, money and clothes. She also includes how all the black men from the south are moving north to look for jobs(the Great Migration). She tells me how all the propaganda posters are everywhere, even on the windows of stores and streep poles asking everyone to join or support. She tells me she loves me and to get home safe. I sure am hoping this ends soon. We go three weeks of constant fighting and running through no mans land and getting thrown back. Finally i’m relieved and we are replaced and sent back to britain on the home front to rest up and get food. When I get back to the home front I find my wife has wrote me again. She says they created the War Industries Board which is now controlling all war funds and what war supplies to buy. She says they’re also taking War Bonds to help supply the army with money. She also said that they mad and act that made people stop stating their opinion of the war and the war efforts(Espionage and Sedition Act). Lastly she wrote me that a guy named Schenck had been arrested and the paper said Schenck had been indicted and tried for distributing 15,000 subversive leaflets to prospective military draftees during World War I. But he wasn’t charged because if the first amendment(freedom of speech)(schenck v united states). She said she loved me and wishes I come home safe.
Recently I got orders that were moving across No Man’s Land in the morning so I’ll hope to talk when I get back, if I get back. Till then, suit up, grab your rifle and a vandaleer and get some rest, we move at first light.
