What is the connection between text/extract and the global issue of your choice?

The connection between two extracts I’ve chosen is that they are both under the topic of wealth and classes. In summary, the extract from the Great Gatsby mainly focuses on Gatsby’s lies about his identities, which are overly forged in order to appear himself as intelligent, and wealthy. By the same token, the non-literary extract mainly focuses on the existence of income inequality between people in Philippines, and how that gap is getting inconceivably bigger in recent centuries, bringing further problems.

They both share a common concern in how people respond to the suppressed, demanding social requirements, that segregates people into different classes. Tying this to a wider context, more people believe that there are severe disparities between different classes, binarily diverging population. Furthermore, in recent years, as mentioned in the website, impoverishment of middle class and rise of super rich further brought to the end of idealistic equality. There are no longer even least bit of equality in social aspects, and pessimistic view turned out to be realistic in modern sense. Sadly enough, Gatsby is showing a fake identity, endeavoring to wash away his poor past. Knowing that lying makes a person feel immoral and guilty, Gatsby’s deceit, I believe, is not voluntary, but is rather involuntarily triggered by society.

Why did you choose this text/extract and the global issue of your choice?

I chose these extracts, because they show the most similarities based upon the background of 1920s and until today. Since the Great Gatsby is one of the most explicit novel that clearly conveys the situation in 1920s United States, after World War 1, I thought that any extract from Gatsby has to do with the topic of inequality; nevertheless, the most obvious bit of inequality reflected was on class and wealth. From its background, west Egg and east Egg are the two diverged region(which actually exist in United States, named Hmptons instead of Egg). The extract also shows Nick’s reaction towards Gatsby’s properties, amused with envy. Similarly, the online extract is credible because it is an actual excerpt from the interviews and Philippines Senate and Congress members. They not only relates the inequality to wealth, but further relates it to political justice.

One of the overarching connection exist between the extracts and wider work I have studies is that there are inequalities between people in society that are deriding a further negative consequences. Thus, it is every human being’s role to ameliorate this inequality, and create a better world, providing equal services to every population.
