Commercialisation in sport

Commercialisation plays a huge part in sport and has a massive impact. Most high level athletes have huge sponsorship deals that are worth millions of pounds. An example of a massive sponsorship deal is Usain Bolt with Puma. This deal is the biggest sponsorship deal in athletics history, but why would Puma want to sponsor Usain Bolt? Well, firstly Bolt is the biggest name in athletics so even if someone does not follow athletics, they most likely will still know who Bolt is. This plays a massive part in the reason why Puma sponsored him, most people will hear about this deal because people know who Bolt is which will bring exposure to Puma as more people hear about the deal. Secondly Bolt is the best sprinter in the World, when people see him wearing Puma products, it may also seem that Puma is the best brand for sprinting gear which will most likely lead to more sales of Puma products.
There are many positives to commercialisation in sport. Firstly, commercialisation allows more money to come into sport which leads to the quality of sport increasing because it allows training factories to improve, teams to buy better players and for grass roots to improve which improves the quality. Another advantage is it grows sports because when massive athletes are signed to companies fans of this company learn about that player and therefor their sport, an example of this is Messi being signed to Adidas, because Adidas are an worldwide company more people learn about Messi and therefore football.
Also commercialisation in sport can allow smaller clubs to improve due to sponsorships and the money earned from them, this leads to leagues becoming more competitive bemuses smaller teams are able to keep up financially with the bigger clubs. Finally, the last advantage with commercialisation is with tv deals like sky its allows fans who aren't able to get to games to still be able to watch them and keep up with their team.
However there are still disadvantages to commercialisation in sport, one of these is its turning teams into business rather than clubs where there primary goal is to make money wreath than being a club, this can lead to clubs not caring about the fans which can lead to fans not caring about the club and stop supporting them.Another disadvantage is we tv deals like sky can lead to games being played in the midweek just so they can be shown on sky, this can make it hard for fans to go togas which lowers attendees to football games and can lowers the atmosphere. Also due to commercialisation club shave been able to bring in foreign players, whilst this has increased the quality of the sport its also brought over different tactics, one of these is diving, this has arguably ruined football which can annoy fans and ruin the credibly of sport. Finally the last disadvantage is that commercialisation has made it harder for lower league clubs to get a big following, thins due to fans of football would sometimes prefer to follow big clubs who are able to sign big players and win everything rather than there local clubs due to commercialisation, this lead to lower league clubs having less of a following.
To what extent do athletes rely on sponsorship deals?
In my opinion high level athletes such as Bolt do not rely on sponsorship deals on a financial basis. As he is at the top of his sport he will be making enough money from sprinting alone, however, i think athletes rely on sponsors quite a lot for their popularity and becoming more famous. An example of this is Michal Jordan who was popular because of his basketball career and well known across America, but is now known globally because of his Air Jordan trainers, which show that a good sponsorship deal can massively increase the popularity of an athlete.
Why did puma want to sponsor Bolt?

The reason why puma wanted sponsor bolt is beast he is the best sprinter in the world, this then links puma to being a great brand for sprinting and athletes who want to improve their speed might buy puma products due to the sponsorship with Bot. Another Reason is Bolt is know worldwide this then grows the puma brand and increases there popularity around the world which will lead to an increases in sales.

How do such sponsorship deals detract from an athlete’s performance levels?

Theses sponsorship deals can detract from performance massively, this is because sponsorship comes with many obligations. This can lead to the athlete not being able to train which will detract form their performance. Also sponsorship can lead to more fame an money this could go to an athletes head and detract from their preface because of the pressure.

Gender issues in sport

Gender issues in sport are a massive issue that massively affect women sport. There are many examples of gender issues in sport, one of these is the fact that there is less money in sport. This makes it harder for women to improve and get into sport because facilities aren't able to improve due to the lack of money and grass roots football for women aren't able to improve. Another issue is that women's football is covered less that men's, this makes it harder for people to follow women's sport and get invested in it.Finally, women fa team to get to play at wembley and have to play at lower league grounds, whilst mens England team get to play at Wemberly, this shows that the FA are saying there is a gap between men and women's football.

Caster Semenya

In 2009, Semenya won the women’s 800m with an four second lead on her rivals at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin,But this victory was followed by a “gender verification test” to establish whether a medical condition was giving her an unfair advantage. But this victory was followed by a gender test. This was introduced to see if there was a medical condition that was giving her an advantage.
Personally i think it is unfair that she was asked to do this whilst men are never asked to do a gender test, to me this shows that the stereotype that women aren't good at sport still exists because there was a women who was good of sport people couldn't just accept it and had to find another reason as to why she was good at sport.
Another issue with thus is the fact that this was leaked to the public which would be really embarrassing for that athlete and would really knock her confidence. Personally if this happened to me i would feel really violated and upset about the issue.
I think this case study shows that women aren't still accepted in sport because people weren't able to accept the fact that she was good at her sport and people thought there must of been an another reason why she was so goo which shows that some people believe that women aren't allowed in sport.
