I kept the brainstorming process simple. Placed the empathy phase results, the main themes and the SCAMPER method’s guiding questions (Dam & Siang, n.d.) in front of me and wrote down ideas for each item, without thinking, organizing, or planning the execution of it. After having a stack of post-its on all over my wall, I began to organize them into face-to-face activities, online activities, and technology/app/tool ideas. Next step was to add them into a document to keep it in a more organized format and accompany them with short descriptions.

The purpose of the digital learning tool would be to assist students, age between 23-40, with a few years of work experience, in transition to the web development field, reaching the end of their web development program, with organized information and resources to guide the planning and development process of their professional portfolio site geared toward their after-program goals, to allow them to consume the info at their own pace, anywhere and anytime, keep them on track and engaged but not overwhelmed, in an environment that they will use in their professional life.

Reference

Dam, R., & Siang, T. In this way I was able to " encourage wild ideas" (para. 1) to my design challenge of coming up with a great potential idea for my Digital learning resource. IDEO (2015) noted that "wild ideas can often give rise to creative leaps" (para. 1).
Therefore for for my brainstorming session, first thought that came to mind was a tree with many branches which represented my intended users floating on circular globe representing the diverse culture within my organization. Along with using post-it notes to document my ideas then grouping them under the following headings: Content, Tools, DLR.

The purpose of my DLR is to provide support for employees within my organization, who work in a diverse- cultural environment, with the necessary tools needed to help foster inclusivity, while empowering their colleagues and others. This DLR would embody the core values of my organization.

I am soliciting your feedback and or suggestion in tackling my re-framed design challenge- problem statement:
How might we foster a culture of inclusiveness for employees who work in a diverse cultural work environment?

Reference
IDEO.

I tried to use some of the IDEO (2015) rules for brainstorming but realized that by following rules you're essentially trying to force creativity into a tiny bucket. I found that by sitting down with a pen and scribbling out ideas that I was able to start with some strong ideas and build around those. This allowed me to follow along those paths and to get a deeper idea of what might be created.

My tool I used was the digital drawing which allowed me to have everything contained in one area without having to go an extra step of putting everything together. The ability to write something down, build on it and delete quickly without any extra effort gave the opportunity to ideate, iterate and come to a conclusion that seems to work quite well. If you look at my brainstorm I definitely used influence from the SCAMPER method but did not follow it faithfully.

References
IDEO (2015) Design Kit - Methods. Actually, I found it hard to focus on this process because I already had an idea in my head. It seemed like each step produced the same answer which is to reduce/eliminate the F2F (face-to-face) component of the onboarding.

As a result of this activity, I am leaning toward an online orientation (MS Sway?) that provides an overview of each unit, and features an area that highlights the employees in each unit and their work. This could be done in combination with a F2F Meet N Greet, every term for new employees.

I much prefer to brainstorm with other people, so if you have any ideas or feedback you'd like to share, I would welcome them!

References
Dam, R., & Siang, T.

For my brainstorming process, I decided to go with Post-Its and just put out all of the ideas I had. I definitely enjoy list making and writing, and this allowed for me to see all of my ideas at once. I put my problem statement in the middle and then just started Brainstorming. I started this process on Tuesday, and came back to it a few times to see if anything else came to mind.

Following IDEO’s (2015) Brainstorm rules, I attempted to limit my own judgement, and approach this problem with a more open mind. I struggled with doing this as an individual, as I found many of the ideas that came up with, I immediately knew would not work in my context for one reason or another. However, I still put them up on the wall, just in case they sparked another idea. Throughout this process, I was able to come up with a new idea that potentially may work. Now the question is if it is realistic for our time frame.

Reference

IDEO (2015) Design Kit - Methods.

In this Ideate phase of my design challenge, I decided to use the SCAMPER method to generate ideas during a solo brainstorming activity. Scamper is a mnemonic that stands for “Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Eliminate, and Reverse” (Dam & Siang, 2017). During this brainstorming session, I started thinking about how to substitute the current model of one training session prior to practicum start with something that would continue throughout a student’s field work. I thought about a private facebook page, ZOOM meetings, MOODLE modules and physical get-togethers. From there I moved into combining what we have with something different, here I thought of combining our existing training with additional three sessions throughout the duration of fieldwork, adding ZOOM meetings into practicum and giving students and mentors a choice of how they would like to connect and stay connected. These thoughts moved me straight into the adapt portion of SCAMPER, how could I adapt our current approach into something new. Community of Practice (COP), which assist in examining new perspective within a group of likeminded individuals who share a goal, came to mind and I began thinking about COP as the framework for ZOOM meetings, FaceBook or MOODLE. Modifying my original ideas with COP as a focus generated many ideas and really inspired me to think outside the box of traditional information sharing and teaching as a method to educate. This eliminated the initial training session of our current approach and instead of the word training, I started thinking about bringing people together with a common goal and laying the ground rules for a functioning COP, which would result in the rearrangement of the current model of one session to ongoing sessions that are focused on reflective practice.

Dam, R. & Siang, T.

Having defined my problem through a series of design principles (Brown, 2019), I set about brainstorming potential ways to solve my problem being aware of my design principles, but not necessarily limited by them. I considered using the Scamper method for brainstorming as I like the idea of having some sort of structure to the brainstorming process, however, I found that it felt more geared towards a resource where an existing model is being updated or replaced as opposed to a situation where a resource would be brand new (Dam & Siang, n.d.). I did, however look for ways to categorize my own brainstorming, as I thought that would make it easier in moving into the prototype stage. Ultimately, I want to create a resource which serves as a toolkit which can be expanded as more pieces of content are created. Ideally, it is a structure that can be used to facilitate in-person workshops while also being easily navigable on one’s own. I welcome ideas of tools that might work in this situation.
