I am looking forward to learning from others in this area. I feel like the standards movement has negated the need for vertical articulation academically and so we just do some social transition by counselors talking a little to feeder counselors. With our district feeder patterns not being ideal it just doesn't seem practical in most areas.

We have all of our departments revisiting and unpacking standards together in PD sessions. We are starting with the freshmen or EOC courses and working out from there.

At this point we are not doing much in this area. The plan is to use the MC information to emphasize the importance of grade level articulation. We will reassess implementation of curriculum maps, use data to identify students weaknesses when they transition to the next appropriate course and use PLC to discuss scaffolding activities for students.

We have incorporated a departmental audit process to revisit our vertical articulation through courses taught at our school. With the help of our instructional leadership team, teachers are reviewing their curriculum and identifying weaknesses and "gaps" created from teacher preference or habit. We then put procedures in place to address those gaps. In regard to vertical articulation with the middle schools, our efforts have centered mostly around procedural items and specific populations such as Special Education, ESOL, and struggling readers. -EW

When we plan for course recommendations, teachers vertically articulate the flow and sequence of their courses and discuss prior knowledge. Additionally, teachers communicate what skills we should be focusing on for any feeder courses. (Enviromental Studies ---> Biology). We would like a Pre-Chemistry (like physical science). In the past we have had a more open line of communication with the middle school. We think it would be beneficial to bring this back so that we can communicate, collaborate, and plan with the 8th grade teachers on important skills that could help students be successful in high school.

The departmental PLCs are tasked to strategically plan ways to support increases and rigor throughout the department and address student weaknesses. Ex/ What is World Geo. and World History doing to help students prepare for US History? Departments also meet to look at course sequence and we have to continually consider opportunities for G+. We also had vertical articulation meetings with the middle school last year that included course sequence as well as collaborating on best practices.

I am also looking forward to learning more from others in this area. I know that we visit our feeder middle schools several times a year - however, this needs to be a more formal process. Within our building, we have done well with our PLC's and the vertical alignment "in-house."

We do a good job of vertical articulation with in our building via PLC meetings. Where we lag is in vertical articulation with our feeder middle schools. It is difficult having so many feeder schools, each with their own agenda. We send guidance counselors, department chairs, and administrators to meet with them, however they are in the same boat we are, too many schools that do things differently. I understand their dilemma, maybe we could meet as groups with common high school and middle schools.
