Inquiry is based on student interests and "wonders" and therefore knowing your students and what they are curious about is essential. As an educator in an inquiry-based setting, students take the lead but the teacher needs to be able to navigate student thought and provide them with authentic opportunities to explore these interests. Providing a variety of learning opportunities (eg., hands-on, discussions, videos, field trips) is a great way to enhance student learning in an inquiry based setting.

You need to create student centred opportunities for inquiry. This does not need to be full class, but can be small groups. These inquiries should be evident throughout class, but not in the sense where it terms into a theme like the previous program. Inquiries should be flexible and change according to student needs. Provocations should be open ended so that students can create meaning from their own observations and explorations rather than coming to a single answer/solution/ conclusion. Inquiries should encompass literacy, and mathematics elements.

At the FDK level, teachers need to consider the topics of interest of their students and step up opportunities for further inquiry into a certain topic or area of exploration. This can be done through "invitations" where the teacher presents materials to capture the attention of students who may be interested in a given topic. I believe that not only setting up an opportunity/inquiry space is important at this age but also being present to observe how the children are responding to the "invitation" or environment; what questions are students asking, what do they want to focus on, how are students responding and learning through their interactions with their peers. Through this active listening and observing, the teacher can help guide students through their thought process and area of inquiry.

Student driven interest to spark the wonder is key to the inquiry based approach to learning. Curriculum outcomes must be met so the displays must be set out with purpose and outcomes in mind. It then allows the teachers to be present to assess
those outcomes along the way. As a teacher is gives me an opportunity to be able to facilitate their learning in an inquiry based approach and view the kind of learner each student is to better assist them in all methods of teaching them. Students in this way are free to collaborate and socialize while engaged in this type of learning, while as teachers, we can observe their problem solving skills and techniques used during their trial and error approach to solving the desired outcome. The assessment can be done in a variety of ways like videos , anecdotal notes, pictures, class discussions, etc.

It is the students interests that guide the learning process within the classroom. Students are encouraged to ask questions, share ideas and explore materials. That is, inquiry based learning highlights the students role in the learning process. From there it is the job of the educator to link students interest with curriculum expectations and find ways to scaffold the activities to reach each student in the class so they can grow academically, socially and emotionally.

When moving towards and inquiry based learning the first thing you need to consider is the strengths, abilities and interests of all learners. It it important to consider that some students are intrinsically more self-motivated and curious and how your inquiry approach will address the needs of all learners. With that it is important to consider the necessary skill development and objectives you wish to reach and how you will assess that. Consider how to keep all learners engaged and thriving. I think your classroom/working environment and resources are also important to think about.

When moving towards an inquiry based approach we need look at the interests and abilities of the children in our classroom. It is important to provide an open and flexible learning environment where the children can explore in a safe setting. We need to consider the fact that inquiry based learning is essentially a two way street. We as educators can learn just as much from our students as they can learn from us. When educators take a more curious approach to new experiences and ideas (rather than acting as the experts) the children are more likely to engage in problem solving and inquiry based learning. It is also extremely important to engage the children by asking open-ended questions such as, "What if...?" or "I wonder what would happen if..." Be sure to provide the students with loose parts, provocations, natural materials and opportunities for further exploration.

Students need to feel safe and supportive before they are able to inquire. They need to be a part of the community and feel free to make a mistake. We as teachers need to create a space for inquiry to happen. First making our students feel safe and supportive. Second, we need to create experiences for them to explore and play. Through this exploration we need to help them to discover their likes and interests and base our lessons and their invitations on their lines of inquiry. If you get to know your student and allow them to share with you what they love you will find their inquiry based approach to learning and your inquiry based approach to teaching comes more naturally. You have to be willing to let go of some of the control and allow the students to lead and guide their learning.

You need to consider what the students are interested in and what will grab their attention and make them want to engage. Also, consider life experiences and children's backgrounds. You need to ask questions that will have the students thinking and wondering and wanting to know more. You will need to have a plan of how students will interact with others while learning and how you will keep track or document what they are learning

Students need to feel safe, supported, and valued as individuals to boost their self confidence, independence and comfort level in their own individual learning styles and ideas.
Purposefully and thoughtfully designing and setting up the learning environment with interesting and open-ended materials that are inviting and spark interest to not only engage, but question and challenge their prior thinking, knowledge and understanding.
As teachers, assesements for and of learning need to be established clearly prior to activities. Mapping out both overall and specific expectations in relation to the curriculum outcomes to ensure that all learning requirements are addressed and chieved is vital to the overall success and purose of the inquiry based approaches.

The presentation detailed what an 'invitation' was. It is a display of materials carefully selected and arranged to invite children. Invitations draw children’s attention and engages them in a world of wonder, exploration, and discovery. Invitations are purposefully and thoughtfully designed with program outcomes in mind. I found this to be exactly squared with my previous thinking around Montessori styled learning and how it can be integrated into the public school system.

Scaffolding towards an inquiry approach is necessary to provide students with the skills, confidence and understanding for them to be successful with it. Gradually, the teacher can increase student agency in their own learning. Being cognizant of students' interests will aid in providing relevant and engaging invitations/provocations to peak curiosity and encourage inquiry. The learning environment and the resources available should also be considerations as well as differentiated opportunities to promote equity and inclusion. Curriculum expectations are important considerations as well.

When moving towards an inquiry based model, educators need to set time aside for observing their students in order to figure out what their current interests are. Educators will then discuss how they can make the interests become a learning experience for their children. For example, if the students are interested in building bridges. The Educators can brainstorm with their students about their knowledge about bridges and what materials they may need to build bridges in the classroom. The teaching and learning model was very much based on the fact that the teacher has the knowledge and teaches the students. The inquiry process allows the educators to set into a student role at times when students take over the role of teacher. I personally have learned many facts on various topics from students I have worked with because their brains think differently than ours sometimes.

It is important to consider the differing levels of confidence, shyness, knowledge, and backgrounds of students when moving towards an inquiry based approach. While some students have already learned the process of questioning, exploring, and wondering out loud, others may question and wonder in silence. Inquiry should be introduced gradually in the classroom to encourage all students to engage in the process. In addition, other considerations should be the curriculum expectations, allowing each student to share their wonderings/questions, how to create room for differentiation and inclusion, as well as exploring ways to organize thoughts and questions.

An educator needs to consider student abilities in the classroom. Diverse abilities means that some methods of inquiry will work for some students, but not all. The Socratic method of inquiry might help a students find answers, while another might get confused or distracted.

They also need to consider that a child's personal life and environment outside of school is drastically different from another students', and their own. Students will need help asking and answering questions, and will look at the same problem/question very differently. The educator needs to be prepared to look at a question from many angles even they may not have considered.

I think its important to consider what the overall goal is and takeaways are that you want students to come away with. Then combine that with the general interests of the students to help guide them in the creation of questions, wonderings, observations, etc., that they may come up with. This will play a role in what tools they use or are available to them to help shape their discoveries.

I think you need to have a strong knowledge of the Kindergarten curriculum. This is because when you are designing your inquiry you need to understand what part of the 4 frames you are accessing. This will also guide your invitations and provocations that you have around your room.

You also need to listen to what your students share during interactions with activities within the room as to what they find interesting and extend your learning from there.

Moving towards an inquiry-based approach means paying attention to children's interests, questions, and ideas and using them to guide learning. Educators should create opportunities for children to explore, investigate, and learn through play while supporting and extending their thinking. This approach should value curiosity, collaboration, and the learning process rather than focusing only on the final result.
