Interviewing DS

Around the age of 5- SOCCER. Father and uncle and other family members played- amateur level, introduced by the family- combination of both ( expected and encouraged). As I got older, I started to enjoy playing soccer.

Enjoyed the Team environment and the socialising aspect of Soccer. Grandparents loved/ proud to discuss Dean’s soccer playing with friends and other family members. Friends in Dean social circle played soccer, so no real negative comments made that he was playing soccer and not AFL( Australian expected sport). Cultural expectation with European background- soccer is the national football sport.

Dean started taking soccer training seriously at the age of 9, prior was once a week training. 3 training sessions and a game on Sundays. If you wanted to make it to a professional level it was expected to be train more, change clubs ( considered professional level). Only ending last year.

Dean’s focus was always soccer as he felt he wasn’t (potentially) great at other sports ( never tried) – main influence of remaining focused on soccer.

Deam learnt teamwork- relating life scenarios. Taught you to think on your feet to be able to troubleshoot scenarios on the field and in life. Health- soccer keeps you fit, socialising ( important to building relationships and expand friend groups. Club dean was affiliated with was predominately results based, especially as you age within soccer progressed. Division success was critical to the club’s reputation.

Taking a break but sees himself getting back into the sport.

Originally was going to the gym 7 days a week. Was able to know when they were feeling burnt out and structure their week better to fit gym in.

Insight: From being within an active family they were able to feel comfortable going to the gym with her brother and not feel nervous or intimidated being in a male dominated gym or area of the gym. Another gym goer mentioned to her that she was the first girl they’ve seen use the weights area and she didn’t feel intimidated to use the area. She went to the gym to do what she wanted without fear.

Impact: still goes to the gym to stay fit and healthy, and because she enjoys it.
