Pony's Motivation

I think one of Ponyboy’s main motivations in the book is his determination to beat the Socs. An event from the novel that shows this is when Ponyboy talks to Cherry about how Johnny is hurt from being made fun of and jumped by the Socs (Bob, Randy, etc). He gets madder and madder as he keeps talking about it. Another event from the novel that shows Ponyboy’s determination to beat the Socs is towards the end of the book when a violent and physical rumble takes place (Greasers against Socs). “I don’t know if you ought to be in this rumble, Pony”, Darry said slowly. Oh no I thought in mortal fear, I’ve got to be in it. Right then the most important thing in my life was helping us whip the Socs thought Ponyboy (114). Ponyboy has a very deep determination to beat and hurt the Socs like the Socs did to himself and the other greasers.

Pony's Flaws

Ponyboy along with his strengths also has flaws (weaknesses). One of these flaws is that he is that he lacks common sense. An event in the novel that shows this is when he walks back home during the night from a movie by himself. He sometimes doesn't think through his decisions. “But sometimes I just don’t use my head. It drives my brother Darry nuts when I do stuff like that, ‘cause I’m supposed to be smart” (4). Another event from the novel that shows that Ponyboy lacks common sense is when he runs away with Johnny. He does not think about the outcome and realizes later that he sometimes just needs to think. He doesn’t think about food, shelter, loneliness, etc. Those are two events that show that Ponyboy lacks common sense.

Pony's Strengths

Ponyboy has multiple strengths. One of Ponyboy’s strengths is that he is good at schoolwork. An event from the novel that shows this is when he asks his teacher if the essay he is suppose to write can be longer than 5 pages. This shows that he is a good writer and wants to achieve good grades from his schoolwork. “ Mr. Syme, this is Ponyboy. That theme--- how long can it be?” “Why, uh, not less than 5 pages”. “Can it be longer?” “Certainly, Ponyboy, as long as you want it.” (152, 153). Another appearance from the book that shows Ponyboy is good at school is when it says that Ponyboy makes good grades, has a high IQ, and got moved up a year in grade school, but he doesn’t use his head; which leads me to the next paragraph about Ponyboy’s flaws.

Pony's Character Analysis

In the story the Outsiders, Ponyboy is a round and dynamic character. He is also the protagonist in the story. He is the protagonist in the character because he is one of the main characters in the book and is faced with conflict. He is a round character because you figure out a lot about him and his personalities. “I was wishing I looked like Paul Newman--- he looks tough and I don't--- but I guess my own looks aren't so bad. I have light-brown, almost-red hair and greenish-gray eyes. I wish they were more gray, because I hate most guys that have green eyes, but I have to be content with what I have. My hair is longer than a lot of boys wear theirs, squared off in back and long at the front and sides, but I am a greaser and most of my neighborhood rarely bothers to get a haircut”, said Ponyboy (protagonist) (3). He is a dynamic character because he changes over time. An event that shows that he is dynamic, is in the beginning of the book he thinks greasers are bad and always have problems. Later in the book, he realizes that Socs have problems and conflicts too. Ponyboy is a round, dynamic, and is the protagonist in the story the Outsiders.

Pony's Personality Type

Ponyboy has many personalities. Some of his personalities change over time. Ponyboy is a hardworking and smart person. However, he takes things personally and is not really sociable. The personality test showed that Ponyboy is a protagonist and the second time it said that he was a mediator. An event from the novel that shows this is when he talks to Cherry. He thinks that Greasers are bad and he shows Cherry that he is not really sociable but is smart. Over time, Ponyboy realizes that Socs and Greasers have lots of similarities. One of these similarities in the book that shows is when Cherry says "You read a lot, don't you, Ponyboy?" Cherry asked. I was startled. "Yeah. Why?" She kind of shrugged. "I could just tell. I'll bet you watch sunsets, too." She was quiet for a minute after I nodded. "I used to watch them, too, before I got so busy…”(35). This shows that Cherry and Ponyboy have both watched sunsets and that Socs and Greasers have similarities. Another episode from the book that shows that Ponyboy is hard working, smart, not sociable, and takes things personally is when Johnny gets extremely hurt. Ponyboy thinks it is his fault and takes it too personally. Ponyboy has multiple personalities. All of these five paragraphs show a thorough analysis of Ponyboy from the novel the Outsiders written by S. E. Hinton.
