Fentanyl cases in Oregon: Increasing education on administering Narcan- Joedina Crocker

When writing the article, Fentanyl-driven overdoses jump, Officials Urge Naloxone, the Associated Press presented a valid point. In the article, the author addressed the surge of fentanyl overdose cases in the state of Oregon, proposing increased education on Narcan administration (Associated Press). By increasing the education of how to administer Narcan, the death toll of fentanyl related deaths will decrease. When administered to individuals experiencing an overdose, Narcan reverses the effects of fentanyl, a type of opioid (Associated Press). Even though the Associated Press did not disclose the individual author of the article, preventing further investigation of the credibility of the author, sources have bolstered the author’s claims. In other words, the author may or may not be credible, however, the author writes credible claims. For example, the article published by the Associated Press states that drug overdoses have “more than doubled between 2019 and 2021” in Oregon (Associated Press). Another, government affiliated, source affirmed the statistics with an infographic. The visual illustrates that between July of 2019 and June of 2021, all drug related deaths have had significant upward trends (CD Summary). Not only does Oregon suffer with increased drug overdose cases, so does the rest of the world. In an article posted by the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), opioid related drug overdoses have increased “over 56% from 2019 to 2020” and over eighteen times the amount of cases in 2013 (CDC). Because cases have increased world wide, cases rising in Oregon can only seem logical. If government websites can confirm the provided claims that the Associated Press made, then the Associated Press made a sound argument. Unfortunately, when concluding the article published by the Associated Press, one can find a fallacy that weakens the author’s claim. The article states, “Anyone taking pills should do it with others and have naloxone available,” (Associated Press). The language comes off as too colloquial and unclear. The lack of specificity causes confusion with the audience, making it seem as though the author gives the audience permission to take unprescribed medication so long as they have naloxone. The author could better phrase this as, “patients should take prescriptions under close supervision by narcan equipped individuals”. Referring back to the author’s overall claim that more people in Oregon should educate themselves on the use of Narcan, If the person supervising does not know how to properly administer Narcan, the patient will experience higher risk of death. The proposed supervision provides a safety precaution in order to decrease the risk of death due to opioid related overdoses.

In “Analysis: Year post-coup, cracks in Sudan’s military junta” by Jack Jeffrey the author offers insight into the Sudanese government a year after a military coup headed by two generals, Abdel-Fattah Burhan and Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo. The article focuses on the relations between the two men amid “rumors of discord” (Jeffrey 2). Sudan has been in political and economic turmoil for years long before the coup and so far the leaders have not brought many solutions to the table. The stability of the new government is to be determined with the unclear relationship between the two generals. The author is quick to suggest “disharmony between the leaders” but provides virtually no evidence to suggest that they are at odds or to whether or not it is affecting the country (Jeffrey 5). The author of “Burhan counters anti-corruption drive”, Africa Confidential seems to think the opposite, giving insight into how the leaders are progressing with one of them heading the “Removal of Empowerment and Corruption, and Recovering Public Funds.” (Africa Confidential). This displays a level of organization and cooperation in the Sudanese government contradictory to what Jack Jeffrey believes. Though the author has likely nothing to benefit from the two military leaders' suggested failing relationship, there is little indication that it is in fact, failing.

Works Cited

Africa Confidential. “Burhan counters anti-corruption drive.” https://web-s-ebscohost-com.ezproxy.bakersfieldcollege.edu/ehost/detail/detail?vid=16&sid=b7340f49-8eb3-4a15-aec5-baa4419e6981%40redis&bdata=JnNpdGU9ZWhvc3QtbGl2ZSZzY29wZT1zaXRl#db=a9h&AN=158579102.

JEFFREY, JACK. “Analysis: Year post-coup, cracks in Sudan's military junta.” AP News, 23 October 2022, https://apnews.com/article/middle-east-africa-cairo-sudan-democracy-2b87ee19685ec2667ac05acff8b4ed9e.

Adidas ended their collaboration with the rapper formerly known as Kanye West as a result of his disrespectful and antisemitic remarks. Jewish organizations, celebrities, and others expressed outrage on social media over Adidas' alleged slow response to the problem. In the article, the author addressed Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail, stating that Ye's saga shows the value of carefully screening celebrities and avoiding those who are "overly provocative or unstable," not just with Adidas but with labels like Gap and Balenciaga as well. Today celebrities who promote antisemitism are now subject to repercussions because it is undesirable. The essay mainly acts as a compendium of prior works that have discussed Ye's situation, well-known companies, and methods for dealing with his behavior. After years of disregarding such behavior, celebrities are now accountable for their acts, signifying a significant shift in these industries. Despite the fact that the author never really makes a conclusive statement, it is clear that the matter is important.

Work Cited

https://apnews.com/article/adidas-ends-kanye-west-partnership-7425f65ea39f7bbdd02d0e033d9be4b8

Three men were found guilty of plotting to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. Joe Morrison, Pete Musico, and Paul Bellar were found guilty of supplying materials to a terrorist group called the Wolverine Watchmen to kidnap the governor. These men most likely plotted this kidnapping because of distaste for Whitmer’s policies and how she handled COVID-19 in Michigan. Inside the terrorist group, there were informants like Dan Chappel holding membership for months. However, the men could not argue for entrapment in their cases even though as more news appears, many of the informants heavily supported the plot. The verdict shows how swiftly legislative action can occur if someone in power becomes threatened. In addition, it serves as a reminder that American's do have freedom of speech, but our actions have consequences.

Works Cited

White, Ed.
Natalie Davis- Climate Change and the Alpine Glaciers

In the article titled “Battle of the Alps? Water woes loom amid climate change,” Jamey Keaten discusses global warming and its effects on the Alps, the highest and most extensive mountain range spanning Europe, and its glaciers. As the Alpine Glaciers continue to melt due to global temperatures rising, the eight countries within the mountain range’s borders remain perplexed on the most environmentally friendly approach to solving the issue. In his argument, Keaten presents a wide range of dilemmas resulting from the melting glaciers, including water security and drought, and urges the nations within the Alpine Convention to come together to reform and act on the plaguing consequences of global warming. Research exemplifies that in the past 50 years, climate change and its effects on the Alpine Glaciers have accelerated further glacier disintegration, allowing for a “51% [decrease] of area coverage in 1954” (Diolaiuti et al.). Keaten theorizes on various possible resolutions to the growing concerns of millions of European legislators and citizens, including proposing international laws for countries in and outside Europe to adopt. While he presents a somewhat biased point of view when writing about the European struggles, it strengthens his argument while isolating the climate change issues affecting the Alpine Glaciers from the numerous other environmental concerns stemming from global warming. Despite the damage appearing to be nearly irreversible, the proposed reforms Keaten suggests will help deal with rising global temperatures and the allocation of the water the glaciers provide if European countries recognize the legislature.

Works Cited

Diolaiuti, Guglielmina Adele, et al. “Glacier Retreat and Climate Change: Documenting the Last

50 Years of Alpine Glacier History from Area and Geometry Changes of Dosdè Piazzi

Glaciers (Lombardy Alps, Italy).” Progress in Physical Geography, vol. 35, no. 2, 2011,

pp. 161–82, https://doi.org/10.1177/0309133311399494.

Strict measures are being taken in Shanghai, China's largest city, to prevent another outbreak of COVID-19 (AP News 1). The demands from government began with a lockdown lasting only days, but have since extended the deadline. Government wants to protect its people, and the people of other nations from the possibility of another COVID outbreak. Governmental point of view is rivaled by the population's outrage regarding the ever-extending deadlines. These political rivals have even resulted in reported anti-lockdown protests.

Many people know that China has struggled with over-population in the past, and even had to impose legislation in order to prevent resource deprivation. Similarly India has been in crisis, and as we learn from the academic journal, "Identifying signatures of natural selection in Indian populations.", its overpopulation has not been battled by natural selection (Mendes 2). Natural selection ties into the concept of survival of the fittest. Those who are suitable for an environment stay alive in said environment, those who are not, do not.

If by natural means, the issue of overpopulation in these countries was addressed, then perhaps the world hunger crisis would be averted. COVID-19 was introduced at a time when China was peaking in population, and before evolution, this virus was designed to attack the weaker populations (elderly, sick, those with predisposed conditions, etc.) (AP News 5). In essence, this virus has the potential to tilt the natural scale back into humankind's favor. The lockdown is unnecessarily strict, for an overpopulation of people who are already fed up with regulations.

Works Cited

Mendes, Marla, et al.
Pakistani ex-PM Khan, supporters start march to Islamabad-Aleyna Lencioni.

In the article “Pakistani ex-PM Khan, supporters start march to Islamabad.” Babar Dogar outlines the political protest march against Shahbaz Sharif and the Pakistani government, as well as the possible things that this march could cause. Former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Iman Khan, rallies supporters behind him to protest his being ousted from his position as Prime Minister, claiming that his rivals in Washington and Sharif are behind this “coup”(Dogar 2). About 10,000 followers march with the Islamist politician, demanding an early election, with no plan to stop protesting until their wants are met. However, the current prime minister, Shahbaz Sharif, with the support of his government, has already publicly denied this and confirmed that elections will take place as scheduled(Dogar 7). Babar Dogar claims “Khan’s march has the potential to spark violence, which would plunge the impoverished country, still reeling from unprecedented floods over the summer that killed 1,731 people and displaced hundreds of thousands from their homes, further into turmoil.”(Dogar 3). A presumptuous claim to make by Dogar, especially with no evidence, such as past examples, that this currently peaceful protest will result in violence. This weakens Dogar’s argument as general assumptions such as this one, that are not factually backed within the article, make him seem less credible and more biased. The only mention of Khan’s description in Dogar’s article happens to be “...a former cricket star and national sports hero turned Islamist politician…”(Dogar 6). The fact that any mention of his political beliefs are substituted for his former profession and religious leaning magnifies Dogar’s attempt to deem Khan as unqualified and violent. Violence, which Dogar mentions throughout the article, assumes is inherent to this peaceful march. The peacefulness of the march may not be absolute in truth but Dogar fails to give any evidence of the opposite being true. This incessant assumption of violence is a common prejudice against the, very purposefully mentioned, Islamic faith. Dogar’s bias is very clear in this article.

Work Cited

Dogar, Babar. “Pakistani ex-PM Khan, supporters start march to Islamabad.” AP News, 29 October 2022,

https://apnews.com/article/pakistan-lahore-islamabad-government-and-politics-cd1f795e4ff1794fc261a7bf7a407b7b. To make his assertion more successful and to appeal to the audience, the author used phrases such as brain-harming, lung-harming, cancer-causing, and climate-harming pollution. Despite the fact that the theme is the purchase of electric school buses, a new topic appears: "These buses will be manufactured in America – real jobs with real salaries," Landrieu remarked in an interview. "We are going to increase manufacturing in this country." Is helping children's health a lie to induce manufacturing in this country? This compels the reader to consider whether or not to support the addition of electric school buses. In fact, Vice President Kamala Harris spoke at Lumen Field in Seattle on Wednesday, October 26, 2022, on this topic, which is where the author received this information.

Works Cited:

Matthew daily.,et al.
Sophia Wheeler - Herschel Walker's business benefiting from unpaid labor

In the article, “Walker’s chicken firm tied to benefits from unpaid labor,” Bill Barrow discusses the ethically wrong and contradictory business practices of Herschel Walker. Having been born and raised in Georgia, Walker currently tries for the position of United States Senator as a representative of his home state. However, his campaign brought to light the complex history of his founding of a chicken distribution company called Renaissance Man Food Services. This company became involved with Simmons Foods, a major poultry supplier, due to his company’s status as a distributor, which CAAIR, an addict recovery program, reportedly sent residents and convicts to work at Simmons Foods’ plants without pay (Barrow 2022). Because Herschel Walker allegedly lied about his business’ questionable actions and its relationships, Bill Barrow argues he could not become an effective senator. However, others may argue that his past business dealings do not disqualify him from serving effectively as Georgia's senator. According to Georgia Democrats, it remains consistent throughout multiple news sources that Herschel Walker repeatedly changes the truth or facts about his business’ earnings and prosperity. For example, Walker says in an Atlanta article, “Renaissance Man Food reported eight employees on those documents—nowhere near the 600 he told Fox Business in 2018—and received a total $180,000 in loans. Walker’s candidate financial disclosure shows he drew a $100,000 salary from the company,” which depicts Walker’s shift in telling the truth about his business (“ANOTHER DAY” 2022). Herschel Walker's over-exaggeration when discussing the facts of his business earnings does not support his good intentions as a businessman or Congressman. Since this topic recently came out, no reports quantify how much of Simmons Foods’ money earned from unemployed labor went to Walker’s Renaissance Man Food Services, but the two businesses have been proven as business partners. Additionally, Bill Barrow uses the cause-and-effect fallacy in the article, which greatly harms the effectiveness of the article’s argument. For example, the Associated Press article states, “Walker’s exaggerations could simply involve conflating some of Simmons’ operations as his own,” which depicts that their found evidence could not be validated (Barrow 2022). Due to not clearly defining the differences between Simmons Foods and Renaissance Man Food Services, the Associated Press illustrates Renaissance Man Food Services as one with Simmons Foods. Therefore, all the business ventures of Simmons Foods fall onto Renaissance Man Food Services, which becomes Herschel Walker’s responsibility. Ultimately, Walker's consistent misrepresentation and concealment of his business actions would not help him win a Senate seat in Georgia.

“Another Day, Another Scam: Herschel Walker Caught in Yet Another Predatory Business Venture - the Latest in a Long Line of Lies, Scams, and Controversies.” Democratic Party of Georgia, 11 July 2022, https://www.georgiademocrat.org/another-day-another-scam-herschel-walker-caught-in-yet-another-predatory-business-venture-the-latest-in-a-long-line-of-lies-scams-and-controversies/.

Permitless carry laws raise new dilemmas for police officers. -Rachell Becerril.

More and more states are starting to adopt permitless carry laws. In the article titled “Permitless carry laws raise new dilemmas for police officers”, Rebecca Reynolds discusses how the Kentucky police detained Carmon Tussey after seeing him heading to a crowded bar with a weapon in hand. The police seized his gun and Tussey was charged with “ terroristic threatening, wanton endangerment and disorderly conduct” and could spend up to 20 years in prison ( Reynolds 2). Tussey’s lawyer argues his actions were legal since Kentucky is part of the states that do not require civilians to carry a permit for their guns. The permitless carry laws bring some problems, especially for members of the police force because now it’s harder to determine whether a person carrying could be a threat to others or not. Law professor at UCLA and expert on gun policy Adam Winkler claims that with a permit “ it would be less suspicious for them to have a firearm” (Winkler). People like to exercise their second Amendment rights but not everyone has the same good intentions when it comes to being able to carry a gun in public. The author states that supporters of the permitless carry laws believe it makes people safer but does not provide any evidence of this. Reynolds only provides evidence to support the claim that those laws bring more danger to people because lately gun violence is on the rise so seeing a person out in public with a weapon in hand incites fear in others.

In the article, "Pelosi attack shocks country on edge about democracy threats", Chris Megerian, Jonathan J. Cooper and Steve Peoples discuss the attack on Mr. Pelosi, also known as the husband of Nancy Pelosi. According to the article, the suspect broke into the Pelosi home and attacked Mr. Pelosi after wanting to know where Nancy Pelosi was. The motive for the attack hasn't been determined as of this time however, so the reasoning for wanting to know where Mrs. Pelosi was still remains undetermined. In a press conference titled, "Dear Colleague to All Members on Attack on Paul Pelosi", Nancy Pelosi addresses her husband's attack and let's her audience know that her husband's condition has seemed to improve. Many have speculated that although the motive of this attack remains unidentified, it could possibly be politically related. According to the article, "Police have not identified a motive for the attack on Pelosi’s husband. Judging by social media posts, the suspect appears to have been stewing in a mix of conspiracy theories about elections and the coronavirus pandemic." ( Chris Megerian, Jonathan J. Cooper and Steve Peoples. 2022). If the suspect did actually attack Mr. Pelosi based on conspiracy theories about elections, then the bandwagon fallacy becomes involved in his reasoning as he could believe it to be true that there are things revolving around the election. Regardless of what may or may not come to light from this situation, Mr. Pelosi was not the only person attacked possibly due to politics, it has become more and more common as of recent years.

Works Cited:
Chris Megerian, Jonathan J.
High stakes in N. Carolina court races with majority on line - Kaylee Tripp

In the article, “High stakes in N. Carolina court races with majority on line,” Gary Robertson discusses the importance and candidates of this upcoming election. Robertson explains that two seats in the North Carolina Supreme Court remain open and will be filled in the November election. Robertson states, “the outcome could flip the court’s partisan makeup during a period of political polarization” (Robertson). This means that the court could be flipped with a majority of republicans for the first time in 6 years. Because this election can change the makeup of the court it has become a very significant event in North Carolina. Robertson explains that outside groups have been “spending roughly $3 million on ads” for the campaigns (Robertson). The amount of money that some organizations are willing to spend for ads favoring different campaigns reveals the importance of these two seats of the court. Robertson also explains the two major political issues that the campaigns focus on, abortion and crime. He also explains how the different candidates respond to certain situations. Robertson gives examples of different quotes from the candidates which most of the time appeal to the pity of the readers. Robertson emphasizes the fact that if the republican party gains control, then they could also “earn veto-proof majorities”(Robertson). This means that they can pass legislation on important topics such as, gun laws and abortion without being vetoed at all. This election is very important to the North Carolina legislation and can have a major impact on the North Carolina Supreme Court.

Works Cited

Robertson, Gary D. “High stakes in N.
Transgender Youth Healthcare-Madeline Moss

According to UCLA School of Law William Institute, Arkansas enacted a bill in 2021 to ban gender-affirming care for minors. In February of 2022, the governor of Texas also issued an order that restricted access to gender-affirming medical care for transgender youth. This includes the use of hormones, classifying gender-affirming care as child abuse. Thirteen other states are considering bills that would deny gender-affirming medical care to transgender youth as of March 2022. Harvard University argues that gender-affirming healthcare is important to the transgender youth's mental and physical health. Denial of gender-affirming healthcare can cause serious harm. Both the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the American Psychiatric Association have spoken against the bans on gender-affirming healthcare. When gender-affirming healthcare rights are being argued against, many times a black-or-white fallacy is used. Gender-affirming healthcare will not be considered when arguing against it; there will be no healthcare for transgender youth, no exceptions. Health insurance and medical insurance companies will benefit from not having to pay for transgender youth healthcare and other gender-affirming healthcare for minors.

Works Cited:
Colvin, Eamon G.

In the article "Families get final say before Parkland shooter is sentenced" Terry Spencer discusses the proceedings of Nikolas Cruz's sentencing trial and the most recent updates. Spencer goes on to say that the deceased's loved ones and those affected by Cruz will get the chance to address him directly. Over four years ago, Nikolas Cruz opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14,2018. He killed 17 people and injured many more. Now, four years later, he stands before a judge ready to be sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Spencer states, "They were barred from addressing Cruz directly or saying anything about him — a violation would have risked a mistrial." (Spencer, 2022). This demonstrates that those affected could not speak directly to Cruz then, and have the opportunity to directly address Nikolas Cruz in the courtroom. Many have speculated that the reason the families and those affected did not address him directly initially was because it would have been too painful. Now that it is known, it could have caused a mistrial and Cruz would have automatically got a different sentence. Because the jury could not unanimously agree on a sentence, the judge can now only sentence him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Nikolas Cruz carried out what is now known as the Deadliest High School Shooting in history, earning him notoriety at the hands of bloodshed. Cruz plead guilty to all charges in 2021, and gave a statement issuing an apology, which was looked at as a grab for mercy. Now as his sentencing trial reaches its inevitable end, it is time to hear from those affected. Many of the affected have already spoken out against the court, the jury, and the judge, saying that it is a disgrace to those affected. They will get the chance to reiterate this in the coming days.

Korea in shock, grief as 153 due in Halloween crowd surge", the authors Kim Tong-Hyung and Hyung-Jin Kim, briefly explain the tragedy of the Soul parade suffocation. Stating that over 150 people have lost their lives in the Halloween parade. What was meant to be a celebration quickly turned into devastation, the crowd of paraders narrowed into an alley for a shortcut but during the process many people were trampled and suffocated resulting in a pile up of dead body's, with many people not even knowing what was going on. The authors Kim Tong-Hyung and Hyung-Jin Kim describe witnesses' stories during the massacre parade, stating that "some people were bleeding from the nose and mouth while being given CPR" (Hyung 2).

In the article “Trick or trash: Candy makers grapple with plastic waste” written by Dee Ann Durbin explains how candy wrappers have an impact on the plastic waste that people deal with today. A contradiction that Durbin explains is how candy makers wrappers are multi-colored so they are a bit harder to recycle due to the color created. This means that they could be recycled but would make an unpleasant color. In paragraph 8 Durbin states “ They’re multi-colored, so when they’re mixed together they come out as an unappealing brown” (Durbin 2022). This means that the recycling process is a bit more complicated because due to the color it is hard to find out what to do with the mixture. Typically, they can't do much due to it being so low in value. Durbin also discusses a lot of issues that recycling companies have with candy wrappers and other recyclable objects. In paragraph 12 Durbin states “According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, containers and packaging made up 21% of trash going into landfills in 2018” (Durbin 2022). Durbin explains that candy wrappers and other recyclables make up a percentage of landfills.

Works Cited:

DURBIN, DEE. “Trick or trash: Candy makers grapple with plastic waste.” AP News, 29 October 2022, https://apnews.com/article/technology-business-recycling-halloween-3d683ca2e6f9f137b228465dfa99f334.
Mexican Police Say Drug Lord Killed 20 Townspeople - Roxanna Tapia

The Associated Press Article, “Mexican police say drug lord killed 20 townspeople”, discusses the use of social media among Mexican drug cartels to post blame. Suspicious videos posted under the name of the Tequileros claimed to be responsible for an attack that killed the town’s mayor, his father, and 18 other men. The police spoke with José Alfredo Hurtado, the leader of the Familia Michoacana, who claimed that he was the target of the attack and barely escaped. After comparing the video to previous videos made by cartels it was proclaimed as a fake. The article presents a hasty generalization fallacy, the evidence that they have is based on the account of a drug lord, a suspicious video statement, and old previous cartel videos. There is not enough information to make a justified claim on who issued the attack. The attack could have been made by a rival cartel or as a political move by the Familia Michoacana in order to sway the public in their favor. The police’s hasty conclusion may be true, but there is still a possibility of it being wrong. There is also the matter of whether or not Hurtudo’s statement is credible, he is a drug lord after all. There is no telling what his morals may be or where his loyalty lies. All in all, there is not enough evidence to make a logical conclusion.

Works Cited

“Mexican police say drug lord killed 20 townspeople.” AP News, 27 October 2022, https://apnews.com/article/mexico-caribbean-social-media-drug-cartels-4eab49ac559743ef8e3566b7ad2641da.

On Saturday night, October 29th, a tragic Halloween crowd surge took place, leaving multiple people dead. When a friendly Halloween party took place, the crowd eventually surged into a narrow alleyway, causing people to all fall on each other "like dominos". This led to people needing CPR or being announced dead at the scene. This event caused multiple views that questioned if this tragedy was planned. For example, Fallas, a witness to this event, states, " We didn’t hear anything because the music was really loud. Now, I think that was one of the main things that made this so complicated". This statement causes suspicion because there was a large crowd of people together with multiple people screaming for help. This being said, if they were so close together, everyone should have known sooner rather than later. The argument weakens when the public claims that the music was too loud to realize that a tragedy had occurred. Because there was a big crowd, the public would assume it would not be difficult to get the attention of the DJ. The city benefits from this in that there will be a better form of protection. Streets may become wider, first responders may receive better training, and the public may have a better idea of party planning. This article is credible because the author has interviewed victims of the tragedy and has gotten different perspectives on what has occurred.

Work Cited

TONG, KIM, and HYUNG KIM. “S.

In the article "At Least 60 Dead, Many Injured After India Bridge Collapse," it describes the horrific events that took place on October 30th, 2022. The bridge collapsed, causing cars to pivot into the Machchu river of Gujarat, India. According to the article, the bridge had been closed for six months for renovation, and had been reopened four days ago on October 26th, 2022. Investigators believe that the century old bridge was unable to withstand the weight, due to the Hindu Festival bringing in a large sum of tourists. Though the death toll is currently at a devastating number of 60, investigators fear that this will rise as more individuals are discovered in the water. Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that he was "deeply saddened by the tragedy," his party announcing compensation for those who were involved. Due to an election in Gujarat coming up in the near future, opposing parties are attempting to demand a full investigation on the ignorance of Modi. They claimed that "the bridge was reopened without getting safety clearance from the city’s civic body." This is an example of a hasty generalization fallacy, as there is no evidence to back up this claim. The only purpose of this claim is to sully Modi's name and make him seem like an unappealing member of office.

Work Cited
KRUTIKA PATHI, SHEIKH SAALIQ.

In the article "FIFA vows to improve Indonesian soccer safety after tragedy," author Niniek Karmini discusses the meeting between the president of soccer's world governing body and the president of Indonesia. During this meeting, they discussed ways to improve stadium safety to prevent a repeat of a tragedy where police fired tear gas at a soccer match causing people to flee leading to the death of 132 people. Karmini mentions that the FIFA President Gianni Infantino, will bring experts and investments to improve the infrastructure across the country, proving that the fans are safe and secure when enjoying the sport they love most. Even with the efforts to improve the safety and security for the soccer matches, Karmini mentions the current struggle to manage soccer in Indonesia. "...PSSI has long struggled to manage soccer in Indonesia because of the game's close ties to politics and years of corruption, violence and mismanagement." (Karmini). However a flaw in this artice includes how Karmini fails to back this statement up with a credible source or quote. Karmini mentions the struggle PSSI has but doesn't provide any evidence that proves this problem to be true.

Works Cited

Karmini, N.

In this article, "S. Korea in shock, grief as 153 die in Halloween crowd surge", the authors Kim Tong-Hyung and Hyung-Jin Kim, describe the tragedy that happened in South Korea. They explain that over 150 people had died due to being crushed at a Halloween parade. A huge crowd of people had taken a detour during the parade in an alley and witnesses say that they had began to fall on-top of one another like dominoes. The crisis is still being investigated but the authors gave as much information that they could. They directly state the conditions of the parade being crowded and very loud. The music was so loud in fact bystanders continued to party because over the music and the mass amount of people they truly didn't know the tragedy occurring only several feet away from them. One witness states, "When we just started to move forward, there was no way to go back,” Fallas said. “We didn’t hear anything because the music was really loud. Now, I think that was one of the main things that made this so complicated.” (Paragraph 9, Hyung, Kim) The man was a Costa Rican architect who had come to visit a few friends and had taken a video showing unconscious people being carried out of the alley. The scene was described as a living hell with people dressed in costumes and just the utter chaos of the entire situation. The authors used informal fallacies because there were no accounts from those who had survived the tragedies only bystanders who's side of the story cannot be confirmed.

Works Cited:
TONG, Kim and HYUNG KIM.
Alien Life -Spencer Corum

The topic of alien life has been a controversial subject since its conception. In the article “The Pentagon Released U.F.O. Videos. Don’t Hold Your Breath for a Breakthrough.” written by Alan Yuhas, a piece of evidence possibly supporting alien life is presented. Recently the pentagon released footage in which an unidentified flying object can be seen moving in ways that no known aircraft can. The article states, “Astrophysicists say there are many potential explanations for what appears in the Navy videos, including atmospheric effects, reflections, and bugs in the code of imaging and display systems of fighter jets.” (Yuhas) Other explanations include a possible experiment by foreign superpowers. Although there is an ample supply of explanations, there has not yet been a proven conclusion as to what the object was. Given the polarizing nature of the topic, many articles fall victim to confirmation bias. Even if clear evidence is presented for one side or another, it is often ignored or considered an exception.

Work Cited

Yuhas, Alan. “The Pentagon Released U.F.O.
Robots taking over Jobs- Janette De Leon

In this article titled "Robots in workplace contribute to burnout, job insecurity", the author Bentsen, discusses the worries of robots taking over jobs and how people feel job insecurity from robots. The article states researches have conducted and founded a number of people in the United States and parts of Asia feel robots will soon take their jobs and also found areas where robots have not been used also feel threatened of their job being taken. "Researchers found that workers in the United States and parts of Asia feel job insecurity from robots, even in industries where robots aren’t being used"(Bentsen). Although a large number of people feel this way, the insecurity is stimulated from news coverage and how negatively an indivual may feel about oneself. The National University of Singapore conducted a survey and each group got an article relating to jobs or robots. The first group was assigned an article of "use of robots in businesses"(Bentsen), while the others were partly unrelated. Once done reading the article each group were surveyed and resulted in the first group being most worried of robots taking over their jobs. This article uses the fallacy of burden or truth because the article explains how and why people feel threatened of robots taking over their jobs however, it also pressures readers we have no reason to feel this insecurity and the reason why people feel this insecurity is due to their own negative thoughts of themselves and news coverage heightening their worries.

Works Cited:

American Psychological Association.
Patriots' Kraft, School Statements Denounce Antisemitism - Emily Dowden

In the article, "Patriots' Kraft School Statements Denounce Antisemitism" by Dennis Waszak Jr, he discusses statements and action made by well known figures, Kyrie Irving and Kanye West and the reactions by the representatives by various professional sports teams. Antiemetic remarks were made by the public figures directly referring to the Jewish community. The owner of the New England Patriots, Robert Craft, is works on making these statements separate from the NFL organization itself. The article states, "A nonprofit founded by Kraft took the extra step of planning to air an ad during the Patriots-New York Jets game on Sunday that condemned anti-Jewish hate speech and encouraged people who are not Jewish to speak up against antisemitism" (Waszak). The NFL organizations says they will take action on the incident by spreading awareness through ads but these methods have not been effective. The organizations says they will do this in order to save their image from destruction. An example would be when the organizations spoke to Kyrie Irving, he says, "'Did I do anything illegal? Did I hurt anybody?' Irving said. 'Did I harm anybody? Am I going out and saying that I hate one specific group of people?'" (Waszak). This proves that action was not taken in order to stop the remarks, but instead they act as if they are preventing the situation from happening again.

Works Cited
Waszak Jr, Dennis.
