I am working with the people who come to Sweden and they need to learn Swedish as soon as possible. A lot of them are analphabets and their integration process is very difficult. I hade some disscusions in my classroom abouth terorists and attacks in their country and I solved it on very interesting way. I disscus with them oppen and I try to take away all missinformations they get or have. Every day we are ending our study day with talking about them most important news from their own countries. It helps them to learn Swedish and to dissus on less heated way with each other.

I addressed these topics with my students every time it was necessary. I am a migrant teacher and I offered my personal and professional life experience as a model. I was a migrant person before being a teacher, I studied my second university and specialization degree in a new language and country , then I had to pass a teacher competition and today, I am the person in front of them. For many students, my personal experience is enough to offer a positive way of thinking. Many times, the barriers are the education acquired in their families and the negative way in which media presented migrants or refugees. The integration and inclusion of the newcomers are society problems, not only school problems, they'll be the future of our Europe.
Enjoy this reading of the European Commission (Brussels, 7 November 2016

My students are in secondary education and they already have preconceived ideas about the terrorist attacks, and these ideas, however, mostly do not correspond to the truth. Normally, they generalize: a terrorist attack carried out by a Muslim, in their heads, still means that Muslims are all terrorists. I think mostly "have the same ideas that have their families”: they hear their parents talk and repeat at school, and that is precisely the intention. Many claim that one day Europe will be converted to Islam, with the growing number of refugees

It is very difficult to fight against a prejudice that is already rooted and we have a long way!

No arguments easy to treat in the classroom, I noticed how often the colleagues prefer not to elaborate certain issues in the world when these things happen. The children often come to school and seek confrontation with us on these issues, ask why they happen, but often many of us prefer not to deal with the problem, probably for fear of saying something rash that can then be reported by the boys parents and become a bone of contention between teachers and families. I believe it is important to address the record in the classroom. Certainly it should be done in a planned manner to avoid arousing resentment. If a guy comes with a burning question, there is no need to ignore it, but if you are not prepared, should rather be postponed to another time, so that the teacher himself has the opportunity to inform themselves and prepare to deal with the subject with the class, in a proper and appropriate.

On the event of a terrorist attack somewhere in the world,the issue of xenophobia inevitably pops out to my classes , too. Although my students (just like anybody else) come to school with predetermined views on the subject pretty difficult to reverted, they usually address it with a certain degree of maturity and objectiveness. I believe that this is primarily owed to the fact that I remain calm and stick to the real facts avoiding the expression of views which will ignite the discussion further.

They had an enormous echo on media, so it was compulsory for us as teachers to discuss the topic in the class. We started the day with a short reading from Anna Frank's Diary, about hope and peace. Then, in each class, the teachers summarized the facts, collecting ideas and impressions from the children. Finally, the pupils prepared posters, drawings, or short texts about peace. The topic was the importance and the need of peace in the world and amongst the individuals. During the English lessons, we also prepared a work connected to the USA celebration of Thanksgiving, recalling all the things we could be grateful for.

As Nora suggested in this interesting video, I try to remain calm and open to my students' thinking but at the same time factual, because they need to know facts through exhaustive information about this issue. As matter of fact there could be the risk to associate the terrorism with Muslim and developing a prejudice about refugee migrants . My intent is to make them aware that behind each migrant there is a personal and suffering story and that they are forced to leave their home country. My students were very engaged and began to express their opinions through a debate about the migration.

We often talk about terroristic attacks in Europe or about the 9 Eleven. Students are very interested: sometimes they are related to a strong fear towards the massive migration some other times they think the authors are fool. Neverthless there is a general misinformation and mistrust especially when they think that migrants come to their town in order to steal them work. So we always need to overcome prejudice through discussion but also pointing out the personal stories underlying behind each migrant or refugee. Some useful examples are always provided by past or present stories about Italian families migrated for better living conditions or other necessity. Real cases are the best way to show that leaving your own country is never an easy choice.

Most of the times I have discussed with my students about the situation of migrants or more recently about refugees, I have found important prejudices. For example, Andalusia has been a traditional destination for many migrants arrived from Africa. I have found that teens use to catch the public opinion which often turns out to be a bad opinion of migrants. Currently it happens to be the same thing about Syrian refugees, for example. Students use to have problems to separate the concepts “terrorist” and “Arabian” and tend to be suspicious. Usually I end my lessons being optimistic but then they return to their homes and social contexts and listen to their relatives and friends who sometimes are narrow-minded.

It was really interesting to let the pupils express their feelings, and then answer to their questions. It allowed me to solve some concerns and misunderstandings. We also had the chance to do a skype session with an etwinning partner, and my pupils were asked a lot of questions regarding the terrorist attacks, which was weird, but very interesting.

We also talk about it more, as in this beginning of the year, we have a lot of new national security rules that we have to apply in each school...

We can't pretend it's not there or that it's going away soon. But we must also reassure the students with facts. I took a school group to London last summer and one student was withdrawn from the group by her parents before we left because of the heightened risk of a terror attack. We talked a lot about this issue and the very talking made all the others convinced to come and left them feeling safe. But it's a hard call for teachers, I admit.

In my school this kind of topics are often left to the teachers of Italian to be delat with: because they know the students better, because they have more lessons with them, because the subjects they teach ( Italian, literature, history, geography) are considered more suitable to include and 'explain' these issues. My impression is that the approch is often a bit too much on 'explaining' rather than trying to understand what students already know, don't know, wish to know - or simply feel. I really liked the above video and the Dutch teachers' solution: they didn't tell their pre-made version and opinion to the students, but help them to build their own, gradually, and working together.

Among my students - expecially those who are experiencing economic hardships - there is resentment against the rapid increase of the economic expenses caused by migrants and refugees. One of them told me:”My father lost his job; we, my family, have no social care; we are living with the financial support of relatives; they, the migrants, live in a hotel, have free medical care, do not pay for public trasportation”.

This is a widespread feeling. I simply asked to verify facts and figures and follow the money. We searched the Net; we used the data made available by the Ministry of Interior; we interviewed informally an official of the same Ministry; we inteviewed two operators of humanitarian organizations; we interviewed the owner of a hotel that houses migrants; we interviewed two refugees.

Our findings are:

1. Italian governement spends 37€/a day/each migrant or refugee;

2. The migrant or refugee receives 2€ or 2,50 €/a day; the rest of the money is paid to the Italian operators involved;

3. According to the hotel owner, he was about to close but, thanks to God, he was assigned the 30 refugees he had requested and now he can work again;

4.According to humanitarian operators, they are receiving a monthly salary.

Our conclusion is: the presence of migrants and refugees has a high cost for the national governement but supports local economies. Much of the money ends up in Italian pockets but public spending on migrants and refugees health care, trasportation, rescue operations is very high.

Some students are reassured, some others are still concerned.

We often come up with discussions about this topic, as it can be easily related to the subjects I teach (Literature and History). Unfortunately, I have realized that many students tend to have stereotyped opinions about this, showing a poorly critical view on the topic. They often accept passively what popular TV shows or the social media tell about it, but aren't aware of the concrete facts and figure.

After the terrorist attacks in France, I tried to open a debate in the classroom. I teach in a secondary school and the class in question was made up of 20 pupils, aged between 17 and 18 years, 2 of which are of Arab origin. It was not easy to mediate the various interventions, it was also really hard to deal with sensitive historical topics, political and religious. One pupil has covertly told me I could be denounced, because at school you should not make policy.

I thought I had to talk with my students, in spite of their young age, because many of them are Muslims. I tried to summarize the history of Daesh, underlining the deep difference between religion and terrorism. So that the most victims are first of all Islamic people. Despite all the information, students went on talking about "we" (European people) and "they" (migrants and terrorists).
It's interesting to notice that rich people, like football players, are thought like "us" also when they come from abroad.

How to discuss a major terrorist action?

As we don’t have many migrants in Poland, a problem seems to be not so important. However, last year I visited Istanbul. It was Erasmus Plus project and I was obliged to take a student with me. The girl who was chosen by me was happy because she met her host – partner in Norway. Both girls from different cultures and religions became friends. A few days before our departure from Poland there was a terrorist attack in Ankara. My student’s parents withdrew their permission to take her abroad. I was in a trouble. I bought an expensive plane ticket for my student much earlier. On the other hand, I couldn’t guarantee her parents that nothing wrong would happen. When I contacted my Turkish colleague to tell her that I wouldn’t bring the student she advised me to contact both girls. They chatted on Facebook and next day parents gave me a new permission for their daughter’s travel. We spent a few days in Istanbul working on the project tasks and sightseeing the city. We have wonderful memories. Both girls strengthen their friendship which overcame all prejudices and fears. It sounds like a fairy tale. A month after our visit to Hagia Sophia and lunch at the nearby square there was a terrorist attack and German tourists were killed. I can’t stop thinking what would have happened if … That’s one of the reasons why I take part in this course even if we don’t have migrants in our country.

They wanted that islamic girls disaprove the event , but the girls felt the same as them and i feel in that way too. I let them to talk and I invited them to look together for facts.
Laura Italy The activities with quiz is a very good
idea to start from what we know and we don't know, also using
numbers, data and statistics.
I think it's important to talk about
how you should never use a category to define a person but you should
always identify it as an individual. So it's important to avoid using
words such as immigrants, refugees as criminals, people with
disabilities, Italians, Moroccans, Africans .... this could be an
opportunity to talk about the clichés and prejudices as well.
Moreover to know the reasons why people
leave their country could be a starting point to talk about the
privileges that some people on the planet have compared to others in
terms of food, water, work, education.

When there was the attack on Charlie Hebdo, one of the Italian newspapers had terrible front page picture of the killer and the title "This is Islam." So, I asked Mahmoud to explain one thing: this really is Islam? And he tried to explain what was really Islam. And then I asked all the muslim kids how they felt in front of this first page, and they explained that the prevailing feeling was feeling offended and humiliated, because they were not so.

The way they manage all this "information" may create anxiety, stress and sadness. I believe that, as teachers, we should allow students to share their feelings by asking them open questions and listen, explain the truth in a child friendly way, emphasizing that we live in a safe place, finding out that there are institutions that try to assist refugees and help the group to take a positive action.

I was there under Erasmus+ KA2 partnership mobility and my hotel was near the harbour. One night, we we saw lot's of police, and people armed dressed in white taking refugees from a militar boat. Everyone gets very surprised about watching this situation live. I also addressed this topic with my students after the November 2015 Paris attacks. My students were shocked and I had to clear up the confusion between terrorists and refugees.

We talked sometimes about terroristic attacks and the reactions were very different: the greatest part of italian students were against muslims in general, the islamic students explained that these terrorists are not properly muslim and that they don’t follow properly the rules of Qran. If I have to talk about migrants to my students I will follow the approach of the first video. It is very interesting how Nora explains the situation of refugees to her students. First of all it is true that not all the refugees are living in Europe, second it is also true that not all the refugees are criminals and third it is true that Europeans can leave their countries easily to study abroad or to work abroad while Asiatic people cannot do it.

Students are often not aware of these three things and it very important to make them understand the reasons why migrants and refugees have to leave their countries GU#5vLZ|Iֈ?o
