Why would I use one?: For film and media its vital to gain an understanding of something, for example, before you start a creative process.

How can I do it well?: Be sure to set out what you want to discuss and question. Its worth taking the time to question individually whether the questions you wish to ask are suitable for a focus group. Why would I use one? I could use one for getting personal opinions on my work or my approach, I can also use them to see an individuals opinion about my projects subject of which can tell me more than statistics can and even the members of the focus group can have anecdotes which Inform me very well.

How can I do it well?
Keep people focused, it’s kinda in the title, but if they go off on a tangent you won’t gain as much. Additionally, it's best to avoid any controversial topics as it is 6-8 people after all and everyone will have varying and opposing opinions which could create a negative or awkward atmosphere.

In the context of film, I would likely use focus groups to gain a more in-depth audience perspective that can be utilized in both pre and postproduction stages.

Keep the numbers down to a manageable group, and try to tailor the audience to suit the specific research goals. There is no point in doing audience research for a genre film, and have a focus group full of people who actively avoid films of that genre.

With focus groups you can begin to gather information and opinions which can aid you in doing just this. Another vital reason why I believe focus groups could play a major part in the topic I'm looking into is to gain an understanding of what representation people want to see outside the stereotypes that we as a society may know.

(With sexuality, it can sometimes be a sensitive topic for some therefore I'll need to keep that in mind)

Example question: Do you trust the policing we have in the UK?

Do we have enough police presence on the streets?

(Based on a journal article eluding to a downwards level of trust in the policing ability)

The consumer has all the power so it's important to get individuals' opinions through focus groups. You could ask:
Their stance on fast fashion
Whether they consider the price or the ethics of a product more before buying it
Which brands they know that are ethical vs not ethical
Are they aware of the journey their clothing goes through before reaching the stores they buy from?

These are ways to understand if consumers are aware of the inner mechanisms of the industry and whether they actually care about it or not. Then products will be catered towards their preferences (ethical practices and materials won't be used if the consumer is indifferent to the ethics), and it's also an opportunity to educate them more.
You'd have to be mindful as to not offend people by making them feel as if you're criticising them for not consuming ethically and sustainably. You have to keep in mind people's backgrounds (e.g. class) as they may find it hard to buy sustainable products since they're known to be expensive.

For example, the participants in the focus group can discuss which design is more realistic, what materials are the cheapest, durable, sustainable or efficient as well as discussing other things to make the development of the site easier.

If it is a joint project, the group can also choose to incorporate different ideas from different designers in order to create the best possible design of a building.
