The Battle of Camden is a battle that took place during the American Revolutionary War on August 16, 1780, near Camden, South Carolina. It resulted in a loss to the Continental Army due to a poor leadership call from Continental General Horatio Gates and with the British having an advantage. The British effectively took about 2000 muskets, 1000 Americans, and wagonloads of equipment.

The day before the battle, General Gates's forced were wildly infected with dysentery but he still chose to attack the British forces on the next day. His men followed his orders but were overwhelmed because they were sick and weak. With this, the British already used their bayonets to charge the weak American forces and ultimately defeated them. Gates had also made another mistake by lining up his inexperienced militia with the British's veterans which resulted in a failure.

The strategy relied on the loyalist joining forces with British regulars to roll northward through North Carolina and Virginia, besieging the rebels in the north on all sides. This campaign repeated the successful December 1778 Capture of Savanna, with Sir Henry Clintons successful Siege of Charleston in May 1780

The Americans had twice as many soldiers as the British did but many of them had dysentery and/or were frightened, inexperienced militia. They also had many resources but they fell into the hands of the British after the Americans' defeat. All in all, the resources of the Americans were not effective due to poor leadership.
