This is done to reduce file size by removing data permanently from the original file, however it reduces quality of the image. It is mostly associated with image file like JPEGs, but could also be for audio files such as MP3s or AAC files. In an image file, the lossyness will show up as pixelated areas and in audio files it would show as a watery sound or reduce the dynamic range of audio. A JPEG image could reduce an image's file size by more than 80%, with barely a noticeable effect, and a compressed MP3 file could be made to one tenth of the original and nearly sound identical. The most common use of lossless compression is in the ZIP file format. Because of this, lossless compression tends to produce larger file sizes than lossy compression (a lossy compressed file may still be about 1/10th the size of a lossless compressed file).

    WinRAR, 7-Zip, Disk compression , applications like this are used to make your image file easier to move around (download and extract) this will save you time  because the process will reduces the overall size of your file but if your sending it to a friend they mite not be able to open/extract because they may not have the appropriate software program to uncompressed the data 

    you mite want to be careful because you can easily find hidden viruses,  Trojans and spyware

    What are they suitable for?
    Vector files are suitable for company logos, as they can be easily scaled up or down. This means they can be used on small prints such as a business card, as well as on larger surfaces like a van, without any reduction in quality.
