This is a method that uses inexact approximations and partial data discarding. This is done to reduce file size by removing data permanently from the original file, however it reduces quality of the image. It is mostly associated with image file like JPEGs, but could also be for audio files such as MP3s or AAC files. In an image file, the lossyness will show up as pixelated areas and in audio files it would show as a watery sound or reduce the dynamic range of audio. A JPEG image could reduce an image's file size by more than 80%, with barely a noticeable effect, and a compressed MP3 file could be made to one tenth of the original and nearly sound identical. Lossy is irreversible.

This is a data compression algorithm which allows the original data to be perfectly reconstructed from the compressed data. The most common use of lossless compression is in the ZIP file format. It is used in cases where it is important that the compressed file is identical to the original file when uncompressed and viewed. Because of this, lossless compression tends to produce larger file sizes than lossy compression (a lossy compressed file may still be about 1/10th the size of a lossless compressed file).

"Lossless compression basically rewrites the data of the original file in a more efficient way"
