I know that I achieved my purpose, as my roommates subsequently responded, acknowledging my text and wishing me luck in class. 

I could not have achieved my goal without writing due to the fact that my roommates were across campus at the time of my text and thus would have been unable to properly communicate with me in-person until 5 regardless - when I could easily share both my schedule and the reason for not communicating it earlier.
