North: The north was highly populated. There was 23,000 people in Pittsburgh, 33,000 in New York, and 43,000 in Louisville. A lot of these people most likely worked in a mill or factory. Some may be immigrants from Europe.
South: The South was mostly comprised of slaves. There were 698,000 slaves in the U.S. and four million African Americans by 1860. A lot of the slaves were heavily concentrated on the South. Most free African Americans, which was 253,000 or six percent, probably fled to the North.

All of these cities were very populated, modern, and industrial.
South: The south didn't have many notable cities, but New Orleans was the most important.

North: As cities grew, the streets grew filthier. A lack of a good sewage system and lack of clean drinking water spread disease. Cities had poorly trained fire fighters that fought fires for insurance money. 90% of a billion dollars was invested into businesses in the north. The north was very industrialized and had their economy based on manufacturing.
South: The economy in the south was heavily based on slavery. The price of slavery increased ten or twenty times by 1860. Cotton was a major source of wealth. The sugar industry was prominent, but not as much as the cotton industry. The south was full of plantations with slaves working on them.

North: The north had many immigrants from western Europe. These immigrants were mostly comprised with Irish people, but there were also many Germans. Nativists detested those immigrants coming to the U.S. African Americans founded the African Methodist Episcopal Church. The industries in the north could also be included into the culture of the north.
South: The south was very rural and had heavy slave-use. A lot of the culture in the south was influenced by African American culture originating from Africa. This included customs, music, dance, spirituals, etc. Many slave revolts occurred in the south. The agriculture of the south could also be used to describe their culture.

North: The north made big strides and advancements with transportation. They worked on steamboats, clipper ships, ironclad steam ships, and railroads. Many of these forms of transportation could help the north import supplies for manufacturing and export supplies for sale.
South: The south also worked diligently with steamboats. These could have been used to transport cotton and other supplies to the industrialized north.
