This warming drives sea level ris in two main ways: by warming ocean water; as it warms, water expands, taking up more space.
One inch might not seem like a lot. However,  every inch of sea level rise covers 50-100 inches of the beach. If the ice keeps melting, the sea level could rise more than 20 feet.That would put a lot of coastlines under water. Islands could disappear!

Also, something else also causes sea level to rise. In addition, water expands as it gets warmer. As the ocean's temperature goes up, it actually gets bigger, even without adding any water from the melting ice! Sea level is another important measure of how fast our planet is changing.
