The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse is a 2019 illustrated book by Charlie Mackesy that follows the developing friendship between the four protagonists of the title. It has been reviewed by The Hindu and James Lovegrove, writing in the Financial Times, included it in his 2019 best picture book list. It was also shortlisted for the 2020 British Book Awards Non-Fiction Lifestyle Book of the Year and won the 2019 Waterstones Book of the Year.

In October 2022, it was announced that the book was being adapted as an animated short film directed by Peter Baynton and Mackesy, with Jude Coward Nicoll voicing the boy, Tom Hollander as the mole, Idris Elba as the fox, and Gabriel Byrne as the horse. The short aired on BBC One and streamed on iPlayer on 24 December 2022 and premiered on Apple TV+ as an Apple Original Film on 25 December 2022 outside the United Kingdom.

Along the way, he met a friendly and funny Mole, a quiet and honest Fox, and a gentle and robust Horse.

The Boy who was walking alone in the winter. He looked around himself and saw nothing but trees and snow. As he couldn’t find a “home”, he then sat down and gave up. But surprisingly, there came the Mole out from the snow and helped the Boy. The Boy then got up and got back on his journey to find “home” with the help and guidance from the Mole.

The Mole was indeed friendly, not only did he play with Boy, but he also showed the Boy great advice, such as teaching the Boy to be kind and brave. More than that, the Mole provides a way for the Boy to find a home. What is so amusing is that the Mole always mentioned cake, we could say that the Mole sure is greedy for cake. But besides that, the Mole was also brave and enthusiastic, he once saved the Fox from a trap while knowing that he could hurt. Therefore the Mole was funny and friendly, but he was also brave and wise.

The Fox was very scary when meeting at first, but he ended up being an honest friend. As the Mole has once saved and freed the Fox from a snare trap, the Fox did the same for the Mole as he saved the Mole from an accident at the river. And so on, the Fox quietly followed the Boy and the Mole to search for a home. While the Boy found that the Fox is quiet, but then he realized that the Fox was honest, and that is what makes the Fox interesting. We could say that “Honesty sure is the best policy”. 

The Horse who appeared out of nowhere in the woods, met with the Boy. They quickly grew on to each other, and the Horse was gentle and strong and protected the Boy along the way.  Moreover, he confessed to Boy that he was a ‘Pegasus’ and he could fly. He has been keeping this secret to himself because he was afraid to fly, and if he flew, the other horses would get jealous. Thankfully he got it out of his chest, while the Boy also openly accepted the Horse as the way he is. This could indicate and deepen the true meaning of ‘unconditional love’. 

As they flew and finally found “home”, they said goodbye and were about to part ways, but the Boy turned back and declared that “home” is wherever loved ones are. Ultimately, The Boy, The Mole, The Fox, and The Horse sat together and looked up at the stars through the starry night.

At the same time, it also reflexed on how adult struggles too. This characteristic helps the viewers to find the resembles between them, and most importantly, it also shows the way to get through the problems as how the Boy got through it. 

The Mole: Based on the film, shows that the Mole was a very enthusiastic character and also a bit greedy for cake. The way he kept mentioning cake makes the film amusing and hilarious. Other than that, the Mole also gave lots of good advice to the Boy. Not only that, but he also freed the Fox who was trapped in the snare. We can say that, the Mole does seem small and funny, but he sure is smart and brave.

The Fox: Depending on how the Fox’s characteristics, we can say that he was quite an interesting character. Started out by being a scary and hungry fox that sacred the Boy and the Mole, but turned out to be a friendly and protective friend that went along to find “home” with the boy. What is even more fascinating about the Fox is that he was a bit of a quiet character, but at the same time, he was also honest and wise. Therefore most of the things he said are quite thought-provoking. Though the Fox did seem reserved when it came to trusting or asking for help from someone, then within some time, he opened up bit by bit, and become close to the others. Besides that, the Fox also showed lots of sympathy and care for others which helped the Boy to get back on track during struggles.

The Horse: Following the story, we discovered that the Horse was actually a ‘Pegasus’ which surprised the viewers. When we were thinking of the Horse as a quite mature character, and sometimes sound like he has gone through a lot, it turned out that the Horse was struggling with the secret he kept from the others. Based on the Horse’s characteristics, it is shown that he cared a lot for others, including how he didn’t want to fly because it made the other horse jealous. But thankfully, the Boy and the others showed the Horse to be himself and reminded the Horse that no matter what. This points out their unconditional love and shows a very meaningful lesson for the viewers.

Throughout the story, we like how the Boy hugged the Fox for the first time. He wanted to show love and affection. Even more heartwarming was that the Fox let the Boy hug him for a moment, and then the Fox slipped out of the Boy’s grasp, and the Boy also let the Fox go. This interaction reflects that true friendship or love isn’t forced. They both gave each other time to adjust and grew a strong bond together.

The scene when the Horse told about the bravest thing he ever said:
During this scene, we can see that the Horse was looking at the Fox while answering the question. He told that “help” was the bravest thing he ever said. This can indicate that the film wants us to notice that the Fox should not have felt afraid and asked for help when the Fox was trapped. Therefore it teaches us to be braver and not think that asking for help is giving up, but instead asking for help is a sign of strength and determination.

The ending scene where they all sat together and enjoyed the stars of the starry night view:
Based on that scene, also reflexes the real meaning of “home”. It deepens that “home” is indeed somewhere warm and bright, and “home” is wherever loved ones are. We can all agree that they were enjoying the moment and glad to be there together.

This film follows the unlikely bond between four friends as they explore the meaning of kindness, friendship, courage, and hope. A story for viewers of all ages in a heartwarming, classically animated film. Moreover, it points out that the differences between them do not make them apart from one another. Instead, they learn to accept one another with an open mind. This point of view can show the viewer a deepened meaning of love, family, and home.

He seems so down and had low self-esteem. At some point, he blamed himself and wanted to give up. But thankfully the Mole, the Fox and the Horse protected and guided the Boy to become hopeful and better. The Boy did show some downside, but he got better and stronger with the help of the others. This also shows that it is only normal to feel that sometimes, and it is okay to not be okay.

The Mole: The story showed that the Mole was indeed greedy for cake. And sometimes can be quite clumsy too. Well, it doesn’t seem so wrong, but we must agree that being greedy isn’t right. We must learn to share and care for one another.

The Fox: Based on the scene where The fox was trapped in the snare, it is reflected that the fox was a fierce and angry character, and showed little appreciation toward others even after being helped. But it might be related to how much The Fox trusted others, it reflected that we all can feel scared by strangers which can lead us to miss-behaved. However, as the story went on, The Fox quietly guarded and followed the Boy, the Mole, and the Horse. He finally trusted them and they look after one another.

The Horse: Throughout the story, we have discovered that the Horse kept a secret from the others. The secret is that the horse was actually a ‘Pegasus’. The Horse could have helped the Boy to find “home” sooner. But even so, the Horse confessed and told the Boy. If we try to be in the Horse’s shoes or the Horse's situation, we would actually need some time, to tell the truth to the Boy too. The Horse so caring that he didn’t want to fly because it made the other horses jealous. In the end, we are glad that the Horse got the secret out of his chest, and the Boy openly accepted the Horse no matter what.

Based on these scenes, we can say that they both were lucky to be fine. But things could have escalated worse. Therefore both accidents happened coincidently, but they all should have been more careful when playing. What we should learn from this is to be careful and not to get too carried away when playing. In spite of that, we also don’t want to give out the wrong message. This problem is not to point out who did it or who to blame, which can make someone feel guilty for something they shouldn’t have.   • “An old Mole once told me, when you’re lost, follow the river, and it will take you home” the Mole said.
    Explanation: 
    • Based on survival skills, Rivers are absolutely vital: for fresh drinking water, for people's livelihoods, and for nature. So it is possible to find homes too. 
    • This quote also seems metaphorical for finding one’s way in life. The river could represent a path or direction one can follow to reach their destination or goal. Following the river could mean trusting in the natural flow of life and allowing it to guide you.
  • “What do you want to be when you grow up?” the Mole asked. “Kind” the Boy answered. “Nothing beats kindness. It sits quietly behind all things.” the Mole said.
    Explanation: It means that we have the cautiousness to be kind to one another. Kindness is the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate. It’s an act of showing care and concern for others. Whether it is big or small, more or less, it will help make differences in the world.
  • “So Much beauty we need to look after.” the Mole said. “Yes. So much.” the Boy said.
    Explanation: It means to show the beauty of nature, so we must love and take care of this beautiful nature.  It reminds us to appreciate and take care of the beauty around us.
  • “I said don’t fear it, not charge straight at it.” the Mole said.
    Explanation: In this quote, the Mole advises the Boy not to fear something but not to charge straight at it. This could mean one should approach a situation cautiously and not act recklessly. It’s important to find a balance between being brave and being cautious.
  • “Do you have a favourite saying?” the Boy asked. “Yes” the Mole answered. “If at first you don’t succeed, have some cake.” the Mole continued.
    Explanation: It teaches that if we fail to succeed in something, do not give up, but instead take some rest or get ready to try again. The quote also means to remind us to look after ourselves.
  • “Isn’t odd, we can see our outsides, but nearly everything happens on the inside.” said the Boy. Explanation: 
    • This is a thought-provoking quote. It means to show us that our appearances can be seen easily, but our thought, feelings, or emotions couldn’t be seen like that. More importantly, it also highlights that what we see on the outside is just a mere picture, because what holds the main picture or the truth is the inside. 
    • Another different way to view this quote is that it teaches us not to immediately evaluate or judge someone or something based on appearances, but instead, learn to appreciate what is more valuable which is on the inside, such as honesty, creativity, kindness, etc.
  • “Imagine how we’d be if we were less afraid.” said the Boy.  “Most of the old moles I know wish they’d listen less to their fears and more to their dreams. What do you dream about?” said the Mole.  “Home.” the Boy said.
    Explanation: In this quote, the Boy and the Mole are discussing how fear can hold people back from achieving their dreams. The Boy wonders what life would be like if people were less afraid and the Mole responds by saying that many old moles he knows wish they had listened less to their fears and more to their dreams. The Mole then asks the Boy what he dreams about and the Boy responds by saying “home”. This could mean that the Boy longs for a sense of belonging and security.
  • “You did so well” the Boy said. “One of our greatest freedoms is how we react to things.” the Mole said.
    Explanation:  It teaches us to be brave to help one another, especially when it is in need or in an emergency. It also reminds us to be thankful to one another. Most of all, it reflects how opposite reality where people mostly stand around and watch instead of helping.
  • “Well, I think everyone feels a bit lost sometimes. I know I do.” said the Mole.
    Explanation: In this quote, the Mole comforts the Boy by telling him that everyone sometimes feels lost. The Mole is acknowledging that it’s normal to feel uncertain and unsure at times and that it’s okay to not have all the answers. This quote could serve as a reminder that it’s okay to feel lost and that we’re not alone in our struggles.
  • “I think home is somewhere warm and kind with lights.” said the Boy.
    Explanation: 
    • It represents the meaning of home where it is warm and bright, surrounded by love and affection, caring for one another, and spending time together as a whole or as a family.
    • It is also good to note that, the context used the word “home” instead of “house” because the word “house” focus more on the place than the warmth or happiness of that place.
      Ex. “Home sweet home”, not “House sweet house”.
  • “Doing nothing with friends is never doing nothing, is it?” the Boy asked. “No.” the Mole answered.
    Explanation: It means that it is still valuable even if we’re not doing anything in particular when we are with our friends, even if we just sit and don’t talk about anything. Spending time together and enjoying the moment can be a very meaningful experience.
  • “Look at that. I am so small.” the Mole said. “Yes, but you make a huge difference.” the Boy said.
    Explanation: The meaning of the following phrases is that it is not important even if we are small, you can do something that other people can’t.  We all have the potential to make a difference, no matter the size. We might as well make good changes to the world.
  • “You fell. But I’ve got you.” said the Horse.
    Explanation: It shows that when you fell or didn’t succeed in something, you still have someone that can help you and always be there for you. The support from others can help you get through hard times. This quote also wants us to know that we are not alone, we got our family and friends.
  • “Tears fall for a reason. And they are your strength, not weakness.” said the Horse.
    Explanation: It reflexes that tears are not a sign of weakness but rather a sign of strength. It implies that it takes courage to express emotions and that tears can help release pent-up feelings and provide relief. Another way to put this into a better understanding is that it is okay to cry, life is not always easy. And it is also a good way to cope with challenges, better than keeping our emotions piling up inside.
  • “I think you believed in me more than I do.” the Boy said. “You’ll catch up. Life is difficult … But you are loved.” the Horse said.
    Explanation: What The Boy said also reflexed that he was doubting his abilities, but sometimes there are people who believe in us more than we do. And The Horse also wanted the boy to understand that there is nothing easy in life but we need to remember that there are many people who love us and always be there for us.
  • “The Fox never really speaks.” the Boy said. “No. And it’s lovely he’s with us.” the Horse said.
    Explanation: According to these phrases, it shows that sometimes we don’t have to talk much, just our presence is enough. We all need one another. Saying nothing doesn’t mean it’s nothing, sometimes just being there and going alongside one another is good enough. Sometimes we all have something to offer, even if we don’t communicate in the same way.
  • “To be honest … I often feel I’ve got nothing interesting to say.” the Fox said. “Being honest is always interesting.” the Horse said.
    Explanation:  The fox didn’t say anything interesting but his honesty is what makes him interesting. Because being honest and authentic is always appreciated. This scene shows that we will still be acknowledged and interested by others for being loyal and faithful.
  • “What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever said?” the Boy said. “Help. Asking for help isn’t giving up. It’s refusing to give up.” the Horse said.
    Explanation: Based on the following quote, it teaches us that one day we all might end up at the point of failing or wanting to give up, so people can sometimes be confused that asking for help is a sign of weakness or giving up, but it is not. Asking for help is a sign of strength and determination. 
  • “Sometimes, I want to say, I love you, all. But I find it difficult.” the Mole said. “Do you?” the Boy asked. “Yes, so I say something like, I’m glad we’re all here.” the mole said. “I’m glad we’re all here.” the Mole said again. “We’re so glad we’re here too.” the Boy followed.
    Explanation: All of us have that shy side in every kind of personality, so saying some sweet and clingy words might be difficult for people who mostly got shy over sweet things. Instead, they create more words or phrases to express their feeling toward the person they loved and cared about. Therefore, there are many ideas that we should focus on the action, not words.
  • “When the big things feel out of control, focus on what you love right under your nose. This storm will pass.” the Horse said.
    Explanation: There will be something that we all can prevent from happening for a short temporary time but at the end of the day things that are going to happen will still happen. Things will get out of our control and we should focus on what we are doing and love the most. Bad things will pass, and we all should forget it and move on because it is just a bad day, not a bad life.
  • “It feels like we have such a long way to go.” the Boy said.  “I know. But look how far we’ve come.” the Horse said.
    Explanation: 
    • This quote is a good example for us to learn and think optimistically. It is a good and healthy way of thinking, and being positive also helps to keep us going forward toward our goals. 
    • This quote also teaches us to appreciate ourselves and our efforts. Based on how people these days deal with problems, shows that we can sometimes be hard on ourselves, which leads us to stress and low self-esteem. So it is best to remember and focus on the progress more than how far we still have to go.
  • “You know, sometimes your mind plays tricks on you. It can tell you you’re no good, that it’s all hopeless. But I’ve discovered this, you are loved and important, and you bring to this world things that no one else can. So hold on.” the Fox said.
    Explanation: This encouraging and uplifting quote implies to give motivation for us when we face a difficult situation. It reminds us that even when our minds may tell us negative things, we are still loved and important and have unique contributions to make to the world. 
  • “We love you whether you can fly or not.” the Boy said.
    Explanation: Based on this quote, teaches us to have unconditional love for others. It also deepens the meaning of love that we are loved for who we are, and not just for what we can do.
  • “Always remember … you’re enough. Just as you are” the Fox said.
    Explanation: This empowering quote shows quite a fulfilling feeling. It wants us to know how to be satisfied with what we have. It also indicates that we don’t need to change to be accepted or loved, because if so then we are not truly being ourselves. Another way to say this is not to take things for granted. More importantly, you are indeed very important and valuable, and “enough” is already in your dictionary.
  • “I’m glad we’re all here” the Mole said. “I’m so glad you’re here too” the Boy said.
    Explanation: This was another way for the Mole to say “I love you all” but the Mole was too shy to say so. How the boy replied back to the Mole, also gives a very amusing feeling, it is indeed funny and lovely to show one another’s feelings. This reminds us to appreciate the people in our lives and to let them know that we are glad they are here.
  • “Home isn’t always a place, is it?” said the Boy.
    Explanation: This seems like a question that the boy asked the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse, but the Boy was already found the real “home” which was with the Boy all along. The Boy declared that “home” is wherever loved ones are,  it can also be a feeling of comfort and belonging.
  • “Well this is warm” the Mole said. “And very kind” the Fox said.  “And look at the stars” the Horse said.
    Explanation: How they continued to express the situation from one to another, shows very mutual feelings between them all. As if the meaning of “home” is becoming more real to them. It indicated that “home” is truly warm and bright, as well as filled with love and cares for one another.
  • “So, you know all about me?” the Boy asked. “Yes.” the Horse answered. “And you still love me?” the Boy asked again. “We love you all the more.” the Horse answered.
    Explanation: Based on the context, it pointed out the unconditional love between them. And truthfully, nothing is always perfect, including us. So it is important to know and accept that. Therefore we must love and accept one another no matter what, not based on what we do or don’t do.
  • “That’s why we’re here, isn’t it?” the boy asked. “For cake?” the Mole said. “To love. And be loved.” the Boy answered.
    Explanation: This context implies a piece of very meaningful advice that refers to the reason for being here.  It reminds us that one of the most important things in life is to love and be loved. Occasionally, we do feel lost sometimes, for some reason we also forget why we’re here. For that reason, it is best to remember that we’re here to love, love ourselves, love one another, and love the beauty around us.
