The main purpose of the deceleration was to assist the Second Continental Congress in obtaining aid from foreign countries. The document also outlines the history of abuses the colonists suffered under British rule. This document pretty much says if the government tries to withhold people's basic human rights, the people are free to revolt. This meant that the colonies had the right to separate them selfs from British rule.
