Roughly 90% of U.S. cotton are from genetically modified seed which the scientists designed in labs, this can produce more cotton and can resist pests.

People who plant cotton want their land used for agriculture to be functional as much as possible, so they’re obligated to protect their precious crops of cotton from pests. (Pesticides protect the crops from getting weeds, insects and diseases.) Growers want to improve crop performance and avoid losses, in order to do that, they need to develop their path to pest control. Using combined pest management, the growers use pesticides in the most suitable way prioritizing the criteria that they have/ make, for example, profitability, safety, and sustainability.

Due to its negative impacts, EPA conducts in-depth worst-case studies to make sure it is safe to use. Fortunately, Pesticide use has been improved in numerous ways all throughout the world. Between 1992 and 2019, Australian cotton growers, for example, cut their insecticide use by 97 percent in terms of grams per bale. Between 2014 and 2019, the use of all forms of pesticides in Australia decreased by 18.2 percent. 6 Cotton yields have continually increased in the United States, while pesticide consumption has remained stable. 

The widespread adoption of Bt cotton is one of the causes for the huge reduction in insecticide use. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a bacterium that kills a range of insects (mostly worm pests) that affect cotton plants.
