The couple were 3 hours into their hike when they fell into the sand. Jessika was able to be freed with the help of her boyfriend but he was stuck. The sand had swallowed his entire leg and Jessika was forced to hike 3 hours until she received cell signal and called park Rangers. It then took the Rangers five hours to find him and get him out of the sand while he was suffering hypothermia and extremity injuries.
