In Nigeria and many other African countries, there exists social stratification - as it obtains in every part of the world. In Lagos, Nigeria, there are thousands of children whose parents can afford the most luxurious of toys while there are equally thousands of children - miles away from the highbrow areas of Banana Island and Ikoyi whose family would struggle to spend $10 on children's toys. The rallying factor however is the importance of culture to the creation and acceptability of toys. Children love toys that they can easily connect with. This explains why it is strategic to use inscriptions(written in local languages) that convey relatable meanings like greetings. Printing the images of cultural or historical figures on these toys are equally innovative.

In Kenya, most of the children in rural places use recycled materials to make toys. Mostly, boys would make cars while for us girls we would make toy dolls from old clothes by stuffing a sock with cotton then it can be bundled up using a small piece of blanket. The toy dolls can be comforting to little ones because they're easy to cuddle with. Below is an example of a toy doll that i made. I am also sharing an example of a Kenyan handmade toy car made using a cardboard.

GARI
Gari is a Swahili general word for Motor vehicle. For an average African child, this can be made from recycled materials like wires, metal sheets, nails, wood bars, among other materials. Gari is predominantly a boy's toy, perhaps indicating the patriarchal nature of the African societies where wealth and property is notoriously owned by men.

To make a toy car out of waste iron sheets, boys twist and manipulate the iron sheet of iron to achieve the desired shape of the vehicle in mind. It takes a few hours of straightening the material before curving out the toy car. the car boy is then rested on top of two medium sized wooden bars though which a nail is run run horizontally. The nail holds tyres at either side of the bar. With this done, the car is ready for a ride around!

My Galimoto is a doll/action figure because I didn't make it directed to either boys or girls. (Honestly I don't know how much of an "action figure" this is but I didn't want to make just a doll) I used an empty water bottle for the body and plastic spoons for the head and arms. Here is my race car galimoto made out of recycled water bottle, pool noodle for wheels, and fuzzy pipe cleaner for handle, and pencils for wheel axles. We tried a gatorade bottle first, but it was too big for the tires. We decorated with eyes and puffs for the kids in Africa.

Since I put googly eyes on the boat I made i named him Larry. Larry is made out of cardboard as the base, a plastic pretzel lid to help it float, hot glue to keep it together, string to pull it around, and a plastic bag around the bottom to prevent it from getting wet. I had tested to see if it would get wet and it did not. I then also tested if it would float or not and it did. Although I still don't know how to put the photos of the boat in.

My Galimoto represents a game I play at the beach. It is similar to ping pong but with no table and the paddles are bigger. I used two paper plates, two paint stirring sticks, duct tape, and 2 balloons.

This toy car is made out of primarily cardboard and paper plates. The body of the car is fully cardboard including the fin, but the wheels are made out of paper plates that were in the trash. To hold the car together I used tape and also used sharpies to color the car (red and, black) This toy is modeled to look like a racing/sports car and is used for entertainment purposes. Finally the car is made up of about 15 individual cardboard cut outs and 4 paper plate cut outs plus a lot of tape.

2 Popsicle sticks glued together in a “v” shape. Glued straws underneath the sticks. The wooden rod goes through the straws. Glue the bottle caps on to the tip of the rods. Glue small rods to the front and back of the vehicle and attach a rubber band to it. the rubber band is sort of like the car's
"power source". if you push the car back, the rubber band will wind up and that is how the car moves.

I made my sailboat galimoto out of an empty orange juice bottle , an unused chopstick, some aluminum foil, and lots of tape. The boat is fully functional and I tested it in my bathtub with a fan. I was originally gonna build a submarine, but that didn’t go very well and I settled on just a sailboat.

This is a doll I made and it has a shape a lot like a Russian nesting doll and it was made from recycled t-shirt fabric and ribbon that was old and being unused. You can't see it but the actual doll is stuffed with an old (but clean) softball sock that had a hole in it. I didn't use and hard recycled things like plastic containers but i made and effort to make this and I even Hand-stiched everything.

Description of toy :

I made a boat called the S.S. Almond. The body is made out of an empty almond milk carton. The stabilizers are made out of a long strand of duct tape. The inner tube is made out of an empty duct tape roll coated in masking tape tape. The flag is made out of a random plastic rod with a double piece of duct tape touching. It is extremely buoyant. You can also put light weighted figures in the back inner tube.

I made a hockey game for two players. I painted a cardboard box (Drumstick ice cream) and cut holes in the top for each goal and at the bottom on each side to retrieve the puck. I used a red marker to draw the face-off circles. I also used lemonade caps for hitting and blocking and a water bottle cap for the puck. I glued napkins to the sides so the puck can’t escape.

This is my galimoto, it uses a plastic bottle as a base, bottle caps as wheels, cardboard as seats, and it has cuts in the cardboard to make it look like windows and doors.
