Dramatic Situation

The dramatic situation of the poem is all about the anxiety and the vexatious feeling that is perceived by the parents because of the limited supplies and food that can be acquired due to the pandemic. The questions that are pondered by the parents are revealed in the poem, mainly about how their family can preserve the supplies they have at the moment. Different solutions were put forward to preserve and conserve the little food they have left, such as skipping meals, eating less, etc. It then transitions into a moment of doubtfulness and sorrow where it seems like all hope is lost. More problems are introduced such as hunger, the current police force, and poverty.

Persona and Description

There are two feasible personas in the poem. It can be either Gina is the narrator and she is speaking and proposing questions to herself, or her spouse is the one narrating the poem while Gina is listening to him. It is normal to assume that her spouse is talking to her because it is written as a dialogue, and we can assume it is her spouse because they are discussing family matters. But we must also consider that it may be Gina talking to herself to relieve from the stress and anxiety that she is feeling. The poem is written in first person and notwithstanding of who is the persona, it can be described, in the first half of the poem, as pragmatic but in a dilemma because they are forced to adapt to the circumstances and regulation of the pandemic. This is seen when the food was being rationed and saved because the number of days they had to stay indoors was still a mystery for them. In the second half of the poem, the persona can be described as someone who is in a state of panic.

Language, Figures of Speech, and Images

There were two languages utilized in the poem, figures of speech and symbolism. Both of them can be described as something that enhanced and made the poem more complex and interesting. In the poem, the first symbolism/image that we can picture is the disease that is causing the epidemic. The disease signifies not only the literal virus that is causing the pandemic, but the agonizing experience the family has to go through because of it. Diseases are known to harm humans internally, and relating it to the poem, the disease is damaging the mental fortitude of the family. This then prompts the person to ask more questions that are not only applicable to the pandemic, but it can also be asked when one is reflecting. “Do you honestly think that we would be able to stretch our patience, our faith, our body, our limits”, this specific question can also be related to any kind of struggle or challenge that is being faced. These lines are also considered to be a figure of speech, more specifically a hyperbole. Along with that, we could notice there are spaces in between the words in the line, as well as in lines 5 and 13.These spaces represent the skipped meals, stretched limits, and constant hunger the family is going through because of the pandemic. It provides more emotional impact in the poem and we can take it as the narrator slowly struggling to speak their words because of how much they have sacrificed. Once the poem starts to transition, new symbolisms start to appear. One that is notable is the presence of police officers with guns and armor that are securing the premises. When analyzing a global pandemic, the sensible approach would be having medical officers to be stationed all around in order to aid those who are infected by the disease. This would calm and reinforce that they would be cared for in the possibility that they do exhibit symptoms of the disease. Instead, police officers were stationed which struck fear and anxiety to the persona consequently causing them to panic. The last figure of speech seen in the poem is an anaphora, this is found in lines 21 and 22 resulting in being able to evoke more emotion and let the readers sympathize for the situation Gina’s family is going through. I for one find the line “What’s so right in suffering silence” to be one of the most impactful lines of the poem. This can be found at the end of the poem where most of the questions have been asked and the persona is fully in a state of panic. The lines set the whole mood and message that the poem is trying to convey to its readers. It completely depicts what the less fortunate are going through, suffering while having no voice to speak out and ask for assistance.

The Poem Paralleled to the World

The poem perfectly depicts the difficulties less fortunate families had to go through during the peak of the pandemic. It shows the hindrances and impediments they had to create solutions for. As I was relating the poem to my life, I realized the great social disparity in the world during the pandemic. As my family was still able to gather resources and essentials during the lockdown, the poem shows how the family suffered in trying to save the little food they have left. It is also likely that they did not have any income received because they can not go outside to work.

Personal Reflection

I think that my chosen text is still relevant to our society today. Although there is no more lockdown in most countries, social disparity between the bourgeoisie and proletariat is still transparent everywhere we go. I believe that it is important for everyone to be aware of this contemporary issue in order to help resolve it. This poem helped me become more aware of the problems the less fortunate have to go through, and at the same time made me appreciate the privilege I have. With that in mind, I will always strive to help those who are poverty stricken.
