The Giver: Character Change and Growth by Rachel Lock

For this activity, show how Jonas changes from the beginning to the end of The Giver using text evidence. Choose one quote that shows what Jonas is like at the start and another that shows how he has changed by the end. Create a ChatterPix avatar for each quote—one representing Jonas at the beginning and one representing him at the end—and record your voice reading each quote. Upload both ChatterPix videos to Padlet along with a short rationale explaining what the quotes reveal about his growth and what experiences led to it. Connect your beginning to your end using the connector, then read and comment on at least two classmates’ posts, noting how their examples of growth connect to or differ from yours.

“I feel frightened. A deep, sickening feeling of something terrible about to happen.” (p. 1)

His fear here is tied to uncertainty and his need for approval, not rebellion. He is still naïve and obedient, believing that the community leaders always know what is best.

“If he had stayed, he would have starved in other ways. He would have lived a life hungry for feelings, for color, for love.” (p. 173)

Here, Jonas fully understands what true life means, even though it comes with pain and uncertainty. He chooses to risk his safety for emotional truth and compassion, showing how much he has grown from the fearful, rule-bound boy he was at the beginning.
