The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (Engineering and Design Thinking)

For this activity, we will make windmills just like the boy in the story. In the story, he used trash that he found around his village. Instead of using trash we will use materials found in our classroom. Students will be given materials such as popsicle sticks, dixie cups, tape, glue, pencils, and construction paper. They will each independently create a working windmill that can harness the wind, which will be generated with a hair dryer.

Students could be tasked on making their very own box building and become a boxitect themselves. They will be asked to bring in spare boxes for the activity. This activity would teach students about the design process to implementing their visions through their own creations.

Students will be tasked to find a why question much like Ada had in the story. After this question is discovered, students will learn to conduct research using trustworthy sources from the library and the internet. They will first make an inference for their why answer. This activity will take place in the library, and once they find the answer supported by details in a text, they will write about it in an informative letter and how their understanding of the topic has changed.
