First, I will work to establish relationships with students to determine who might benefit from this group. To do so, I will spend time in the hallways, the cafeteria, and attend student activities to show my presence in the school. This will help earn trust and show students that I am vested in their lives.

Secondly, I will create a school Instagram page for out school counseling department. I will use it to advertise events, opportunities, and scholarships. By posting and interacting on my IG stories I can keep a pulse on the vibe of our students.

Finally, I will use social media and my presence to let them know a) what a small group is, b) what’s in it for them, c) why I think they would be perfect for it, and d) what they would bring to the group.

I would start with a needs assessment ahead of time to gauge student interest. This would be a simple Google Form students could complete during activity period. Then I would use the results to select the right students for my tier 2 small group counseling services. I could also collect data from students when I'm conducting classroom lessons.

Once 10-15 students are selected, I would visit with each member individually for 5-10 minutes to gauge their interest. I would use the "TAP-In" process for pre-group screening (Missouri Comprehensive Guidance & Counseling Programs, 2015). During these brief individual interview sessions, I will tell the student about the group, ask them if they are interested and committed, and then pick the members based on the focus and group needs.

It is critical that I select students who wish to be in the group otherwise the group will not be effective.

Stages of Group Dynamics

Stage 1- This stage will focus on students getting to know each other, setting norms, and building trust (Missouri Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program, 2015). Being a small high school, it is likely the students already know each other or have at least "heard" of each other. The key to this stage is allowing adequate time for ice breakers and sharing opportunities for the members to get to know each other outside the classroom and break through any pre-disposed opinions they may have. I will help the members recognize the common characteristic they share to create a bond. They have all been asked to be members of this group for a purpose. Establishing this purpose and common goals will help build trust and establish norms.

Stage 2- Once relationships are established, the work can begin. During stage two, the lessons can get intense and call on members to participate individually and collaborate with others. If a member is holding back, I will encourage them to share. I will also be careful not to let a member dominate the conversation. It will be important to ensure they have ample opportunity to share their individual struggles, but then time to support each other through the strategies they have learned. After each session, members will complete a simple Google Form which will provide data for me to evaluate the session's effectiveness.

Stage 3- Closing the group will occur during the last session. We will create a group padlet recording skills they have mastered and how they will help them in the future. This will be a good reference for students once the group is over to recall what they have learned and then apply it to their daily lives. We will discuss the continued importance of confidentiality. Finally, I will remind them that I am available for further support and not to forget the other group members. While they will likely not leave best friends, we would discuss how the members could continue to provide support once the group closes. (Examples: simple smile in the hallway, text messages asking for help, speaking up in class when another member needs support).
