The Communities-in-Residence programme directly responded to this by providing free space to local community partners for creative, social and support groups within a COVID-secure environment and in line with the government's support group guidance.

    The residency model has worked so well that we plan to continue developing and growing this model beyond the pandemic. The residencies enable us to provide spaces for ideas and people to connect. 

    Our current Communities in Residence are Accumulate who provide creative activities for people who have experienced homelessness, Age UK City of London, supporting local older people and Key Changes who provide music engagement and recovery programmes for young people and adults affected by mental health conditions. We are also currently developing a new residency with a young refugee group in the Conservatory, May Projects who aim to reconnect people with nature.

They are designed for those who may otherwise struggle to access our programme, due to financial, health or social barriers, but also as a way of the Barbican hearing directly from these groups to learn and ensure that we don't perpetuate these barriers. 

    Community Views are events that are co-created with our partners. The events include access to see an exhibition (or film or piece of theatre) with connected creative workshops and activities. I met the lovely guys at the Barbican at one of their workshops and they asked me to create a workshop for their Community View. I used to be a workshop leader back in my 20s and doing this really reminded me how much I love doing this sort of work. I made my activity bright and colourful and they got me to do it with 3 or 4 different groups. I'm so grateful for the chance to do this as it made me remember my skills with people and it boosted my confidence no end. I remember when I first met Marice [Accumulate lead] I couldn't even look her in the face I was so lacking in confidence at the time. But through doing this work, it made me feel equal to the people I was working with and like a functioning member of society again, not a thief, drug addict or a criminal. 

    Let me fast forward to where I am now. I'm drug free alcohol free, I'm healthy and I finally feel like I have a purpose in life again.     The drawing is a left handed self portrait from a workshop today organised by @accumulate_ldn at @thebarbicancentre led by Chris and Chris from @headwayeastlondon I had a wonderful time as usual seeing everyone. I liked the theme of this session, it got me thinking about what art is, who is an artist etc and I realised that I am working thru lots of preconceptions about what it is to make art and my own stereotype of an artist. It’s taken me 37 years to be able to say out loud I am an artist without feeling stupid. Anywho that’s me.
