The Nativity Façade

The Nativity Façade is the northeast side of the basilica and was the first side to be built. Antoni Gaudí's naturalistic style was meant to be polychromed, or painted in vibrant colors. Gaudí started on this side of the basilica because he was worried that the Passion Façade would scare people away with its starkness. This façade celebrates the life of Jesus and depicts scenes from nature and many, many animals. Gaudí died before this façade was completed.

Antoni Gaudí: The Architect of a Dream

Antoni Gaudí became the second architect to helm the Sagrada Família project and sadly died before it was even 30% complete. He combined gothic and art nouveau styles for this donation-funded basilica. Gaudí knew that he wouldn't live to see the completion of the project. After all, his "client isn't in any hurry" (Hornblower, para. 3).

Naturally Inspired

The interior of the Sagrada Família is inspired by nature. As you can see in this video, the support pillars branch like trees to hold up the roof. The ceiling has leaf-like shapes and there are hardly any flat surfaces to give it a more natural feel. The stained glass windows play a part as well. The red and orange windows are in the western side of the building, facing and mimicking the sunset. Antoni Gaudí developed new techniques to advance the field of architecture in order to create these strong yet seemingly weightless forms.

The Passion Façade

On the opposite side of the building from the Nativity Façade is the Passion Façade, which shows the story of the crucifixion of Jesus. In contrast to the naturalistic, ornate style of the Nativity Façade, this side of the basilica is very stark, with supporting columns that resemble bleached bones and taut tendons. When you exit the doors and look straight up, Jesus on the cross is looming above you. This side was designed by Josep Maria Subirachs and a team of architects years after the death of Gaudí, but it stayed true to his vision for how it should "strike fear into the onlooker" ("Sagrada Familia," 2021).

The Glory Façade: An Unfinished Masterpiece

The third façade is called the Glory Façade and is currently under construction. The spires represent the ascent of Jesus into heaven and will have more decoration than this architect's model shows. The main doors into the basilica will be on this side and feature the text of the Lord's Prayer in Catalan. This photograph was taken in the museum dedicated to the history and future of the construction of the Sagrada Família that resides underneath the basilica.

The original plan was to complete construction on the Sagrada Família in 2026, the 100 year anniversary of Antoni Gaudí's death. According to a Reuters article, Xavier Martinez, director general for the Sagrada Família, said the recent shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic has pushed back that date and it could be as far away as 2040 (Faus, para. 5).
